Another development:

 

A new LTX is out in my size in a month.

 

 

The Defender LTX M/S.

 

Supposedly combined the LTX M/S2 with their long lasting, weather conquering, new "defender" tire tread tech. Will (In guessing) replace the M/S2 since its within a few dollars in price.

 

 

But, pre-order is $282 more than the Conti's

 

$610 installed vs $892.

So, I called discount Tire and learned something. Cost for a TPMS replacement is $60, no matter if your only having it done or having it changed during new tire install.

 

I was going to have them all done since two are flaky, but no point now! The one that was going off an on for a year started working fine 6 month ago and still does.

Yeah, tires are absolutely insanely priced these days. Since I ride motorcycles, I'm used to spending a lot and not getting much in return. Tires are one thing I don't skimp on though. I tend to take up all my bottled up frustrations out on the truck, so I need rubber that STICKS.

 

I kept my OEM 18's and mounted Blizzaks on those. Those tires are AWESOME in the snow - much better than I ever would have imagined. Definitely would've smacked up the truck a couple times without them.

 

My summer wheels are OEM '10 LTZ 20" mags. Thing with reading the reviews is, they run the gamut from 14" tires on a '92 Toyota, to load range E's on a spankin' new dually. Quite a bit of variation there. Then there's people who have never held a lug nut in their hands, trying to explain how the tire functions. :lol: Took me about 8 hours combined reading between last night and this morning to get a good handle on how decent the tires were.

 

I was laughing at some guy's review from NY of the General Grabber UHP sport tires - he says, "These are terrible in the snow!! I was nearly killed on the highway!" YA THINK BUDDY???? HAHAHAHAHA! Wow ...

Yeah, I'm just not sure how long I'll keep it around. The couple of GMT900 reviews I've seen on the Conti's looked great, so thinking I'll go with those

 

 

I have 4/32nd tread left(maybe a bit more up front). But the 5 year old coopers have fine cracking in the rubber on top and side if you get up close.

Seems to happen a lot nowadays. I put Michelin Green X tires (with absolutely zero improvement in mileage, btw ...) on the wife's '86 Grand Marquis 5 years ago - they're all dry rotted from top to bottom - even between the tread. This thing is garaged 70% of the time too, so the sun hardly ever sees those tires.

 

Also read a lot of other Michelin reviews stating the exact same thing. All weather-checked at year 2 or 3. Seems every manufacturer on the planet is finding ways to cut corners these days. For the money we spend you'd think we'd get a long lasting product. If not dry rot, it's super-fast tread wear. Can't win.

They did the rebuild kits on mine. It wasnt very much at all.

I remember seeing sensors on eBay for like $20. Must be made in china ...

 

You'd have to use the truck as a bead breaker to get them in without a tire machine though. That usually bends the dust shield up. These days they're plastic, so it'll probably bust ...

 

Maybe $60 ain't so bad after all ... :D

I have option C. Poor bad weather traction but excellent wear life. Haven't had tires long enough to notice dry rot.

That sucks. Sounds like a super-hard compound.

 

I noticed that with mine hauling that car to VT Tuesday. I went to pull out on wet pavement with some cars coming quick, and the tires lit up like crazy. Barely even touched the gas. Trailer was holding me back. Hasn't done that in years, but did it 3 or 4 times on this run. Mine are getting hard as a brick from age, slowly but surely.

Sensors have saved me 3 tires so far. Leak fixed and many more miles driven with tires.

 

I like the TST system I bought for the dually. Can monitor up to 18 wheels, truck and trailer. Set alerts, also reads temps.

Have thought about getting a set, do they hold up well? My 20' boat trailer is narrow, it'd be nice to have a set to monitor the tires since I can't see them, but they'd get dunked. Monitoring the pickup tires would be ok, but over 28,000 miles without a flat on these tires... Knock on wood.

Running thousands of miles a week, hours between stops they're a huge plus. But if your only going on short drives they're useless....Unless you never look at you tires.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
