I finished the passenger side valve cover gasket today, a week or so after I did the other side. This side was a huge PITA due to less space towards the back due to the firewall, heater hoses, and dipsticks. It was generally a shitty job due to that, everything just takes longer than it should.

And I ended up ripping the pcv hose that runs from the valve cover to the throttle body so I had to stop everything and source one, then go pick it up. Luckily simple 3/8 fuel/pcv hose from O'Riley's did the trick.

The old hose was melted was melted onto the metal tip from the valve cover, very strange.

Next up is an oil change, hopefully by the middle of this upcoming week.

The drivers side was very clean on the inside compared to the other.

What oil do you use? Does your dipstick have a brown tint too? Mine did when I bought it, three rounds of Pennzoil platinum cleaned it off.

You could see the valve spring of my cars from the oil fill spot, they looked new on both cars when I sold them, after buying new, 7 years later using penzoil platinum for most of them.

I've been using Castrol GTX 10w30 and 5w30 for the past 2 years but prior to that it was mainly Valvoline.

These images are with the oil about to hit the 5k mile mark. And the dipstick is clean, it doesn't have any sort of tint or residue.

A car I bought used ran conventional for after the 6 digit mark. I ran some synthetic for 2k miles and what came out looked like coffee. Might think about trying a round, I'd bet you'll be amazed how dirty that oil would be. Edited by SnakeEyes

That's how they blend now. They say it's for a perfect match, but I had a body guy tell me it's unecessary if a painter is worth his salt. That guy just sprayed about a foot around the damage on my car at the time and the paint match was perfect. Charged about a third to half of what the other shops wanted because of it. Said he was almost fired from a shop because the manager was getting upset over him not blending further out. Asked the manager to point out where He painted a car and the manager guessed the wrong spot, manager looked like a fool and then got really mad.

He said so many painter's just aren't good enough it's standard practice to paint several feet all around the damage. I'm sure $$$ has a lot to do with it also.

Kinda what I was thinking good to know that fender was scratched all to hell from working under the hood just means I have one less fender to replace

No new campers to pull today...nor Friday, or Thursday...never gonna make it to a million.

Have had some bearings and seals replaced but engine and Trans is original.

IMO GM diesel is designed to go a million if you don't put extra power to it.

Rear end all original or carrier and pinion bearings and seals replaced?

Rearend has had work down. And extra work at that do to GM tech over tightening and forgetting to tighten parts. Shop fixed a lot of that work free of charge. That guy doesn't touch this truck!

I Put a set of Bilstein 4600s on the front; I did the rears earlier. They feel nice.

My brother's 2500HD barely crossed 200k. Now the body is rotting out, frame braces in the rear have rotted in half, hitch and spare fell off, doors leak like sieves, and now it sits dead due to an electronics failure - some magic box that controls the injectors. :banghead: Not to mention the 5 window regulators it's been through, the fire that nearly totaled it 4 years ago, and all the other failures that have already been fixed.

Million miles my ass!

:shakehead:

It's the pewter/copper colored one with the tarp over it, waaay in the background ...

That doesn't happen if you clean and keep paint on the frame.

    • The curb weight on a 1 ton crew cab long bed is around 7k lbs.  Now, I don't know where you went to school but 9k is not more than 2x 7k lbs. More than 2x 7k lbs would be 14k+.   With that said, obviously yes you're going to feel a 9k lb trailer when slowing down.  I already said, when accelerating.  When changing lanes?  No.  But if you look at the context of what was quoted, the original person said, "after a mile or two..." which means that would be after the accelerating portion and you're driving a generally steady pace.  Please do learn to read and comprehend.
    • So I purchased the Range unit for my 2026 and I am seeing different locations suggested for the ECM . Can anyone confirm wither under hood, left side or right side or behind the wheelwell?
    • Like I've said before. Di and Carbon buildup is not that big of a concern. Engine had minimal buildup, and that engine was obviously not super well maintained. Do regular oil changes, and you're gtg as long as the rest of the truck lasts. Also, the High Pressure FP that people ****** about, but can't tell you why.  Now, I wish they'd trash the variable oil pump. No real world issues with them, but I'll gladly eat whatever miniscule MPG it's saving me in favor of more oil at all RPMs.    Curious to see his assessment of the 7.3 compared to the 6.6. I expect he'll praise the port inj, but from a structural standpoint, the 6.6 is as robust as any engine out there.    Not to take away from the 7.3. I feel it's equally as good as the 6.6.     As to heat on the rear cyls, I'd have to see numerous examples before I'd say it's an issue. Especially not knowing the history of that engine. For all is known, they could have blown a rad hose, and ran it hot, and the 2 rear cyls may be the first to get hot in a low coolant situation, but not be an issue aside from that.
    • "Life is getting back to normal."    I'm driving again and all new joints are operating as expected for this stage of recovery.   My most recent joint replacement still requires a lot of attention but experience has taught me that time will quiet the remaining pain.  I joked with my surgeon that another joint replacement would take my mind off my most recent surgery and he responded by saying the next will be a hip!  There are no plans for another surgery but, unlike me, I don't think he was joking!  I certainly wouldn't refuse further replacement  if required but hope to spend time out of the "post-op"  period.  I can't stress enough that if you have been recommended for total hip, knee or shoulder replacement that you welcome the offer.  Post-op "recovery" may sound daunting and painful, however, this is far better than the insidious erosion of mobility you are currently experiencing.  Imagine what it would feel like to wake up most mornings feeling better and more mobile than you did the previous day!  Prior to my first surgery in June 2025, even getting out of bed was becoming a formidable task.  Since the day after my first surgery, I get out of bed everyday easily and unassisted.  Making the switch to feeling a little better each day rather than a little worse, is hugely motivating!
