You honestly think turning off location based services on your phone will ensure privacy? It won't. If you don't trust OnStar that's fine, I'm not trying to sell anyone on it but I laugh when people express concern about privacy with it yet have Facebook, smart phones and every other modern gadget- even paying with a credit/debit card at the store- The supermarket tracks what you buy, especially if you have a loyalty/reward card. Same for any other store. Privacy has become an illusion with the onset of technology.

Remember the car and driver article that actually started the whole texting while driving thing? Was I the only one that noticed the reaction time of the youngest guy who was texting was faster than the oldest guy while PAYING ATTENTION!

Get the old farts off the road!

(Wait for it..... :P )

I repeat...unless you apply the same laws to police officers, firefighters, paramedics, cable TV vans, utility trucks, power company truck, pizza delivery guys, ad infinitum who have laptops installed in their vehicles that allow "messaging"... DON'T EVEN THINK OF TAKING AWAY MY PHONE OR TEXTING CAPABILITIES. If states (Florida included) can remove helmet laws and riders splatter their brains on the roadways and vegetate for the rest of their lives, then leave my phone alone! If I have the right to ride my bike without a helmet, then I certainly should be able to decide if I want to text and drive or not.

Wrong. When you text and drive you are putting other drivers at risk. Ride with no helmet its just you.

I hope you are sterile.

Comparing texting to impaired driving is just not right. Texting while driving does not impair your judgement, it distracts you. Driving while drunk is an impairment to your judgement as well as your abilities. Not the same thing at all.

Laws are made for the lowest common denominator out there. Sure some people can walk and chew gum at the same time, some cannot do it without walking funny. How should we define who can text and drive, and who cannot? Pretty sure you will find that anyone that currently texts while driving feels that they can handle it. Too bad it usually takes an accident to show someone that they in fact cannot drive while texting. You may not be the cause of an accident, but, you may not be able to avoid one due to the distraction of the phone. Does that mean texting is safe? To me, it means that not avoiding an accident should be the same as causing the accident if the distraction is shown to have meant the difference.

None of the the vehicles you list are allowed to use those devices while driving. They either have to stop, or their copilot does it. I volunteer on a response team... and that's the rule. Companies have zero-tolerance for such things, considering the liability. As for a pizza guy, well... the same law would apply to him.

From a ff/emt, we can not use these while driving. The other person has to do it or we pull over. Otherwise we get in major trouble.

Problem with using helmet law as an example is that rarely does a bike accident kill or maim a car driver, but, distracted driver of a car will likely cause injury or death to whatever he/she hits. Using the logic of let me decide what I can do or not do is only applicable when you are completely by yourself, with no one else around. And in that case you cannot be charged for doing anything, no witness present. Funny thing about logic, just when you think you have it, logic bites you in the ass.

OH YEAH???????????????????????? - READ THIS ARTICLE:

The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit found, on average, there is a crash every other day in California, caused by an emergency driver who is distracted.

Consider: there is normally only one police officer in each car, when an ambulance is transporting a patient to the hospital, there is only one paramedic in the cab, there is only one Fedex or UPS driver entering data into his/her handheld as he/she drives. In our high tech society, there is no way we can live without entering data into the "system" in some way and it's going to happen as we drive. It is forced upon the employees by their agency or their company. So do NOT impose restrictions on me and my cell phone!

Texting and driving myself and realizing it has distracted me I have to say its dumb if you're defending it. It distracts some people and causes head ons the most deadly accident, so give it up its proven, looking down and using a touch phone causes avoidable accidents. Go ahead and say shit about police and paramedics, they have to use their computers they save more lives than morons on the road kill that they are saving. If you have a mountable phone or Bluetooth you won't be apart of this statistic, give it up people who look down at their hand to use a hand held cause accidents. It is proven! It's different using a touch screen in dash I've done both, you lose sense when you look down to your hand.

Arguing about police, emergency, taxi people doing it anyways is just like watching cops and the guy who complains about the guy who was in front breaking the law, but he goes to jail anyways, you won't win so don't bother.
