3.08 vs 3.43

Hello everyone,

 

I am shopping around for a 2013 4x4 Sierra with the 5.3 and was wondering what would be better for my situation. I drive 85% in the city, 15% highway and never pull any kind of trailer or boat. I will keep the same tire size and will not lift the truck. I live is south Lousiana and all roads are flat. I need the 4x4 for the dirt roads during hunting season.

 

So far the only trucks that I have found have the 3.08. Since I dont pull anything and the roads are flat, would this be ok? And would the 3.08 give me better mileage? Do they offer the 4x4 in the 4.8?

You can get a 4x4 4.8. he 3.08 will offer better hwy MPG's. Also you double posted so I am going to take care of that other thread

I would go 3.73 if possible. I have 3.73 in my 2006 and it still makes 18 mpg at 70. I don't know what the difference in mpg is exactly in town, but everyone says lower gears do better in town.

I have the 3.08 and I can't prove anything about getting better mpgs compared to a friends 3.42. If anything 3.42 might help with low-end acceleration from a stop...such as city driving. I just think the first gear isn't quite low enough sometimes. Really gotta feather the throttle from a stop.

I would go 3.73 if possible. I have 3.73 in my 2006 and it still makes 18 mpg at 70. I don't know what the difference in mpg is exactly in town, but everyone says lower gears do better in town.

 

 

3.73 is no longer a widely available option like it was for the GMT-800's

I would go with 3.43 cant imagine would really make a big difference in mpg. also 3.43 has more towing capacity which might be something you need down the road or if you ever want to sell it the prospective buyer may want to tow with it.

3.43??? GM doesnt have a 3.43 rear end. Its 3.42 :)

The only reason to buy a 3.08 would be if your situation was reversed - 85% highway, 15% town - OR you can't find anything else... If you find a 3.42, go with that ratio as first choice.

I have a 2011Yukon XL with 3.08 's and a 6 speed transmission. Its plenty quick off the line and idles down the highway. Highway mileage 20.5-21 , city 16-17.

My 08 has a 3.73 rear end, the 13 Z71 I am test driving has a 3.42. The only thing I have noticed, is at 70 my 08 turns 2100 RPM and this 13 turns about 1700 RPM. Since the RPM's are so much lower, it seems to spend less time in V4 mode.

Around here, the Z71's mostly have 3.42 gears and the 2wd's have the 3.08's for the most part.

 

But to answer your question, if you do not pull trailers and are not putting larger tires on it, the 3.08 gears would be fine.

As stated above, the 3.42 would be better for you since you drive moslty city. The mileage difference isnt gonna be that much different between the two on the highway. but, in the city, it could be a difference of up to 2mpg depending on how heavy your foot is. Plus, you would have the lower gears for offroad and when you tow. My wifes Tahoe has 3.42s and I would not have it with any higher gears.

 

IMO, go with the Z71 with the 3.42s.

The cheapest deal you can get and regear it to 4.10....... or even 3.73 and then you technically could get the dealership to reflash the TCM for it as it a factory available ratio with the 6L80E in the NHT package. Not sure on 4.10 as it is available factory but only on the 6L90E equipped 2500/3500 models thus the dealer probably can't add it to your VIN...... but you could always ask. 3.73 with a 5.3/6L80E has been done by guys at the dealer.....

 

Best mod you could ever do for drivablity either way. I have driven a Yukon with a 5.3 and 6L80E and it was a turd that was hard pressed to do much of anything..... I couldn't imagine putting up for longer than I had too.

It's not a race car lol I got a regular cab with 3.23 4.8 and I compared them with many trucks at work and the only noticeable change is when you have a bigger motor. One tons to half tons 4.3l to 6.2l we got em all. 6.0l flat deck duellys haul ass lol
