Have a few cuttings in the books already. I'm about due for my second fertilizer application. I tend to cute almost twice a week in the spring, but it's slowing down this week it seems, so I held off and will likely raise the height and cut this weekend.

I live on a ridge in TN, which means the soil doesn't hold water, and is difficult to maintain as a traditional "lawn". I tried killing off weeds every year, using amendments etc., but always faced a partially dead yard in July. I have too much to water, so I'm learning to like "weeds", since they don't die easily, and keep erosion in check. Clover is that obnoxious friend who's always there to help...

No not USDA. I'm a crop consultant. Mainly row crops but I have 2 large sod farms I take care of.

 

The mower is just a new toy. Used to take 3 hours to now the lawn, now takes one hour. Nice!

Let's see - I have about 5 acres to mow. So I mow it when I think it will start to bog the tractor down and I can't run full speed and when I get a day that there is a good chance it won't rain for 3+ hours (which lately is not often).

 

Other than that, I wish it would die out and I'm I sure as heck not doing anything to make it grow faster - I have more interesting things to do with my time.

There is a lot of oak trees in my yard. A lot. Zero turn makes a lot more efficient use of my time. The 31 HP Kawasaki is a beast.

As for fertilizer, I use the Scott's fertilizer (no weed control) 3-4 times a year, and use the bottled weed control you attach to the hose, usually the Spectracide brand when on sale. Seems to work pretty good for me, grass is just about the greenest on the block (if I don't miss a fertilizer app!) with only a few dandelions popping up here & there from all the neighbors yards! I would like to reseed this Fall again though, it's been a couple years since it has been done.

 

Still need to use the weed contorl in the back yard. Having a dog makes it a bit of a pain timing between the weather cooperating when we will be home all day (at least in morning with dry grass so the dog can just be put in the kennel) & the dog needing to go outside!

 

Try to aerate Spring right after I roll the yard in the Spring, then also in the Fall if time allows.

 

Have a '04 Toro Z master 27/60 for mowing, and a '93 Craftsman GT ('84 GT needs work-it's "TIRED"!) that does the "pulling" duty, as well as Winter duty!

Hell no on the fertilizer! lol Lawn grows fast enough. I spray a few times a year to kill weeds. Trimec does a wonderful job. Believe Home Depot sells it, so does the local Rural King.

Mervz, I am an agronomist. You say you're having dandelion problems, so I thought I'd help you for once. If you have a Tractor Supply locally you can get what you need there. You will need a sprayer to broadcast a herbicide, to successfully accomplish control. Get 24DLV and Simazine. The two mixed together will work well on broadleaf weeds. The catch is you need to spray this while the grass is dormant, or prior to green up. This works well on centipede, St Augustine, and Zoysia, and also Bahai. If you have something different PM me and I will help. Its late for this season probably in your area, but good excuse to get a cool new sprayer, and a beautiful lawn. A man after my heart! Although I mainly do industrial applications of herbicides and have been doing so for close to 35 years. Since up here in Canada all the good lawn herbicides have been banned for residential use I bring a bottle or two back with me from the US every spring! haha
