My new 2014 GMC Sierra SLT

My biggest gripe is GM only allows you to "order" the black interior with the All Terrain package. Pretty assinine, if you ask me.

Ah, ah, ah, ahhhhh. It's not the black ebony. It's carbon-fibre-inspired interior. :driving:

Looks much nicer actually.

All I'm saying is if I have to pay $50K for a truck, I should be able to order what I want, not what GM says I can have. And if I want to pay more for that option, that's my prerogative. But why even eliminate the choice? It doesn't cost GM any more to put a different color interior in the vehicle. Why limit the interior color choice to black? (if you do a build with the All Terrain package, you only get one interior color and looking at the fake carbon interior on-line, it looks cheesy - it may look better in person, but not on-line.)

Just because this is a "pro" GM site doesn't mean they are infallible and can't do better - there is a reason they declared bankruptcy. And I never said I had a problem paying $50K. I do have a problem not being able to get the options I want, regardless of the cost.

I had a 2008 Denali and loved the truck but hated the cheesy fake wood grain. I e-mailed GM suggesting they do away with it on the Denali. Fortunately, the new Denali's appear to have switched to the metallic looking appearance that's similar to my 2011 All Terrain's finish, which looks 100 times better than the fake wood that was in my '08 Denali. Another issue I have is the Denali used to be the only truck that came with the 6.2L V8. Now you can option it on just about any GM. That's good, but diminishes the appeal of the Denali and now the 6.2L V8 isn't even standard on the Denali, so why bother?

The bottom line is - will I buy a 2014 Sierra? Maybe. But if I could order what I want, I definitely would.

I agree.. but GM also has to limit configurations somewhat to make it cost productive. SO.. I guess (in the case of Chevy) the LT, LT-1, LTZ, High Country,etc.. is enough choice for 99% of buyers? I would think so.. But I do get what you are saying..

As for GM filling BK.. read my other past post for that real story.

Also for the All Terrain.. my understanding is the "fake carbon fiber" is actually real allum trim pieces? But.. I could definitely be wrong there. I will tell you soon enough as mine should arrive in 6 weeks.

I read somewhere the other day that it's a close number to around 10 grand per truck that GM makes profit wise. If their making that much extra there's no reason these things need to be priced so high.

EDIT: Here it is:

"The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are both now in dealers across the United States. Their introduction is crucial for GM - not only because they're by far the automaker's best sellers, but because they're also among its most profitable. Estimates indicate that GM derives about $10,000 or more in profits on each full-size truck sold."

that profit info is true... it's well know that the trucks are the key money makers for GM, FORD, etc...

However.. on the flip side.. they take a lose a ton on certain vehicles for a variety of reasons. Take the Chevy Volt for example- I think they lose well over 10K on these.. it's horrendous. But it's the costs of doing business when the US government calls the shots. GM has to appear "green" and the government is likely mandating them produce that POS car.

As I said above.. GM is going to price these trucks based on simple supply and demand.

I read an article this morning that said GM was delivering about half (50%) of their first run production on the '14 trucks to Texas, and are making that their battleground. They'll be making some kind of cross-state sales show, in hopes of snagging a few Ford guys. I think that's crazy myself, since it only leaves half of the new trucks for the other 49 states.

Edit: Found it... and I guess I didn't read it, I listened to a video. Not sure how I wound up there, but it's interesting.

Thinking they can manipulate that $10k 100 different ways. True cost to build, deliver & warranty the vehicles. How long does the vehicle remain viable before needing to be revamped? From R & D to all the legal things they have to comply with, is that written into each vehicle? How about all the stamping machines that cost millions? Dealing with unions who renegotiate things every couple years. Mind boggling how much goes into each unit & sourcing all the components.

Not defending GM or any mfg as I think EVERYTHING is overpriced & our dollar is worthless(Thank you Uncle Sam). But always wanted to know how the bean counters determine true profit on a vehicle until it has hit the end of its cycle?

Have you gotten used to the electronic assist steering yet??

Electronic steering is nice. One complaint is I drive mine all week and then jump in my wife's terrian on the weekends sometime and it almost feels as though she don't have power steering.

Mikenh don't hold me to it but I think that's only on the 4 cylinder model.

Possibly. I know the 4 cyl I drove had it, never drove a six.

My wife's is a v6 and not sure about the electric steering but its hard compared to mine in my truck.

I'm glad I didn't see this truck until now, last week I bought a 2011 GMC in the same color with only 6700 miles on it. It's my first truck in 16 years ago and I got a great deal so I can get a 3rd stall baby in a year. If I seen this, I would want this and not be able to afford the Z28 I'm planning on getting. Great choices made, love the truck and am jealous!

    • The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, 4.3 VIN "W" engine. :cracks knuckles:   On a whim - because I needed a headache - this truck was for sale so I stopped to take a look. Doesn't run. Well, it does, but barely. Long crank, choppy idle, bad misfire(s), it REEKS of fuel. I can DO this..I'm thinking. Diamond in the rough. One owner until last year. A young guy is selling it, he bought it 6 months ago. It stranded him more than once, he's got a newborn. It was in the shop 10 days ago and he "thinks" they said it needs a new fuel injection system. He can't put any more money into it, needs it gone. I was thinking of upgrading my Macbook, which is a total want, not a need. For less than the price of a new laptop I can have fun for months tinkering on this truck and enjoying it. I'm taking this truck home. The guy was beyond thrilled, his wife was there, she thanked me profusely, I could tell they were hurting. They seemed like good people in a bind.   Some parts, a wash, maybe a set of tires, and I can have a few months of fun and then turn it for beer money (or the next project).   Sure enough, there's a work order from a shop last week in the INCHES of paperwork on this truck dating back to when the first owner bought it. They put a new distributor in it, fuel injection work describes basically opening the plenum and putting it back together. He said he couldn't afford any more work so he had them button it up and that's when he put it up for sale.   I'm not well versed in 4.3. I did discover 1995 uses the 1992-1995 SCPI "Spider" injector which is riddled with issues from splitting lines, clogged or cracked poppet valves and plastic spider legs that crumble over time. Cool. I'll just order me a ne---. Oh, the auto parts store doesn't have it? Rock Auto doesn't have it. eBay? $$$$$$ for used. These are UNAVAILABLE period end of story unless you know "a guy" who's still got one in a box somewhere.   Can't upgrade to the '96-'04 injector, it's a different plenum, wiring/pinout and sensor config.   There are a few kinda "know a guy" -guy rebuild services for these injectors out there for about $350. Okay, Okay... I'd like to know if anyone has used them? Anyone got a lead on these crappy 92-95 spiders?   I also don't want to send MY spider to Narnia and back without knowing if that's truly the problem. I guess I'll need to pull apart the plenum and do some digging.   I was also thrown for a loop. This 1995 model year truck has an OBD-II connector. The interface is decidedly not OBD-II. I can read and reset trouble codes and view live data, but there's not a lot of data. Like misfire count and on what cylinder, that's not there. It's OBD-1.5.   Nothing is ever easy. Now it makes sense why this guy wanted to disappear this thing for cheap. I'm guessing the shop told him the injector is toast, the part is unobtainable and they're not going to sort sending the thing to a rando offering rebuild service on craigslist, and the kid likely can't be without a working car for 3 weeks even if they'd facilitate that.   Experience with these early SCPI's? Stories? Things to check? Sympathy? (..Nah...)   This can sit until I sort it. But I haven't had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't easily solve in a long time.
