2500 Air Bag and Door Chime Issues

Hey guys. I have my first questions to ask here. I've asked them before elsewhere but figured I will ask here as well in case someone knows something more that everyone else.

First Question is my Air Bag light is on and the DIC is stating "Service Air Bag" I have been told that it could be a impact sensor gone bad or the BCM has got moister in it that has made this happen. The BCM was replaced my the Dealership under a recall and is completely new. Do any of you have any info on what it could possibly be, or where I could start diagnosing the problem?

Second Question I have is that my Door Chimes are very faint. You can just barely hear them chiming. It happens all the time with any door open or when any warning chime is going off. Once in awhile they will start chiming loud again but only for a few seconds. Do you think it is a fuse of some sort or maybe a wire? Has anyone else have this happen to their truck?

Thank you in advance.

Airbag message could be dozens of things. You need to have codes read with a scan tool that can pull body codes. As for the chimes, they're through the driver door speaker I think so if that speaker is on its way out then that would explain the faint chimes.

hmm ok. Do you know what scan tool will read BCM codes? Probably will have to go to a shop or something. As for the door chimes my door speaker is fine when music is played through it.

You'll need to find a shop. The scanner autozone has won't pull them. As for the chime, unless its different volums for different things I'm not sure what to suggest. When you say the speaker is ok, have you adjusted fade/balance to just the left front speaker? Also, in the DIC you should be able to adjust chime volume I think.

The DIC I have is just the read out in the cluster I do not have the buttons on my dash above the headlight dial. Im guessing that's were I could do the adjustment on the DIC if I had it. I have not adjusted the Fade to just the left side, my music plays fine out of that speaker at the settings I have it on for normal use. For the airbag I figured it was a shop scan kind of thing, I guess I will have to find a shop that can plug it in for cheap or free. Thanks for the info man

Regarding the airbag, I had the same message come up on my '05 Suburban. I called Onstar and they gave me the code, and it came up as the sensor. I didn't do anything about it, and a few weeks later the light went out. Since then, it comes on occasionally, and then goes back out, so I've never done anything about it. I assume it's just a loose connection.

That could be a possibility don't have onstar linked up on my truck so I can't call for a code unless I reactivate it for the 3 free months agian HA! I will have to see if I can find the connections and see if one is unplugged. My light have been on continuously for months now. I wonder how hard it is to get to the sensors by the way. Thanks for the tip.

dont be doin anything besides getting the SRS scanned ,while you are at the dealer have them go in if possible to adjust the volume of the chimes

I noticed last week my door chime has gone quite also. Kinda nice, but I don't like not having the key in the ignition reminder and lights on.

Same here. I don't mind not having them but theres some times where you wish you could hear them clearly. I just think is strange how one day it just decides not to work anymore.

Do you have the stock stereo or a aftermarket unit? My truck has a aftermarket stereo and a module had to be installed to retain the warning chimes. I can adjust the volume of the chimes with the dimmer knob with the lights on and the key in the off position.

Now is that only possible with your aftermarket radio and module installed, or can any of our trucks do that?

As far as I know it's a feature of the module that had to be installed because of the aftermarket stereo. Since tje po had it installed I never checked my owner's manual.

The only reason I found out about the chime volume adjustment is because I went to the module's manufacturer's website and pulled up the information for it. The po had put a cheapo dual cd player in the truck and I replaced it with a kenwood unit. I figured I would go ahead and check the wiring to make sire it was done properly.

    • 100% agree, there are a lot of variables. I definitely do not drive I’ve like a grandpa but also don’t drive like I stole it. Truck is currently in the shop so I’ll have to get weight later. The price for driving it doesn’t bother me. My precious was a 6.2l so the cost between the two is a wash.
    • if you want a short turning radius get a short bed Colorado!
    • that is pretty awesome MPG there!  I think so far one observation is these trucks do way better on MPG under 65mph vs 70+ and they really suffer at 75+   I noticed on the stretches into NE on 76 and 80 which is posted 75MPH and I was doing 82 I was getting more like 13.
    • No ETA is available for that engine at the moment in the GM system.   I would start at the dealer.  Try and talk to the parts manager or service manager and see if they can start a CX Connect case and get an ETA from GM on when engines may be available.  If they just check Parts Workbench and say "no eta", they aren't trying hard enough.  They need to do a CX Connect and chat with DPAC to find the ETA.
    • I would have to read back to get a better picture in my mind of some of the other comments and what they were using for a driving scenario they based the fuel mileage off of. That is why the fuel mileage conversation is extremely difficult to make fair comparisons from. If I was to be living in town and only driving around town, light to light and some longer stretches that doesn't have a light every block, and the usual stop at a grocery store and the bank and so on and so forth, my fuel mileage even during the summer time would be so bad with my truck I don't even want to know how bad it would be !. Then add in winter time and idling to warm it up to clear the windows and driving through snowy streets etc, large heavy trucks with gas engines have NEVER been worth crap for fuel mileage and why some little pot licker of a car with wheelbarrow tires and a 1300 cc four cylinder non turbo engine was the ticket to using a mere fraction of the fuel over a full size pickup.    By the way my truck has the 34" tires as its a HC but not the BFG KO3 tires ( that was an option for my truck but the sales guy couldn't figure out what the tires actually were so that never got on the order until it was too late to change the truck order ). So what fuel mileage your getting actually sounds good for "town driving" and with my truck when I go to town the fuel mileage keeps increasing as I get closer to town because it takes quite a while to get the driveline oils warmed up ( and why it always shows better fuel mileage on the return trip from town because its already warmed up ) but once I am in town that fuel mileage average just keeps dropping the more I mess around town and then has to recover back to something reasonable again by the time I get home for an over all average.    I'd be curious what your sticker says for the factory weight of your truck, mine is close around that 7700 lb due to the options it has. But anyway the long and short is, vehicle weight, higher rolling resistance heavy tires and a hefty driveline and a relatively large gas engine make for crap fuel mileage in stop and go scenarios, all one can do is drive it easy off the line at each stop and as my dad had said over the years, drive like a raw egg is under your foot and that's the best one can do. Years back with a carbed engine and if the carb was getting a bit out of tune etc as would the ignition system, the fuel mileage on pickups with larger engines was just awful compared to what your getting. We pay the fuel price penalty for driving HD trucks over some little vehicle, that is the reality.
