2014 Sierra with "express rust protection" NIGHTMARE

You don't need it? Take a look at the undercarriages of some 5,4 he'll even 3 year old trucks and suv's in New England - I'm sure the east coast Canadians will agree also.

If you want to keep the truck long term and use it for what a truck is meant for and don't want to be driving around in a rust bucket then undercoating is a good idea.

The problem with alot of those undercoatings is that they are put on top of the factory wax coating....which eventually peels off anyhow. At least with the current coating, you can go in there with a wire brush to clean it off and clean up the bare spots. I'd be scared of having it held to the underside of the truck so that water and salt can sit against the steel components.

DEALER SCAM!!! I used to apply it when I worked at a dealer, couldn't believe people actually payed for it. The paint protection is bullshit as well, no better than a coat of Rejex or Adam's Quick Sealant. Now you learned your lesson, save your money next time.

I would love for you to come to 3M with me so they can show you what it actually is and does. If the stuff you used wasn't 3M then it probably was garbage but the stuff the dealership were I bought my truck from, uses the 3M which is an excellent product.

Just a little fyi guys, the paint protection isn't 'just wax". It's a Teflon based sealant that gets absorbed into the clear coat AND paint. It's much more advanced than carnuba based wax. Modern technology is finding it's ways into everything now and this new Teflon stuff is no joke, it's leaps and bounds better than wax. Granted you don't have to get it done at the dealership, but to do it yourself once a year is all that's needed. As far as the rubberised undercoating go, it's good product that will last a lot longer than krown or something similar. It also makes the truck that much quieter again. It sounds to me like the dealership was just a hack when applying it. Others are right though, if your not going to have this truck for a quite a while, your not going to benefit from it. The guy who buys it off you will love you for it though haha.

Paint Protection is a well known scam. There are paint sealants out there and have been quite common for years. They don't have to contain Teflon, but even if they do, it often does not make a difference. Sealants simply last longer due to chemical reactions that cause them to bond with a clean paint surface. There is no sealant that I know if that "penetrates" a clear coat to protect the underlying basecoat,. That sound like pure marketing crap.

Even the term "sealant" is generic. It can be old school like an amino functional resin, or newer like polymer ones. 3M is just a manufacturer. Thy bought Meguiar's a few years ago. If anything, a dealer applied "sealant" is probably a sealant from Pro or Car Brite since they dominate the professional market.

Are you talking about undercoatings? If so a PROPERLY applied undercoating can have benefits. If you are talking about paint coatings, they don't last more than 3-6 month's, all you are paying for with the dealer paint protection is insurance. The dealer makes money hand over fist with those since most people roll it into their loan and never bring it back in. If you don't believe me, email Larry Kosilla at this site; http://www.ammonyc.com/ and ask about dealer protection plans. Larry is a world class detailer, and get's flown in by everybody from Bugatti to Ferrari to Zonda to detail cars for shows like Pebble Beach. Want more proof go to the Adam's polishes forums and ask them about dealer paint protection. Do you seriously believe a dealer installed paint coating will last 5-6 years?

I'm not talking about only dealer pain protection I'm talking about the Teflon stuff you can buy from 3M.

They do last 5-6 years...for people that finance vehicles. They pay up every month for the snake oil.

Ever wonder why if nothing sticks to Teflon, how does Teflon stick to paint?

It's those science people that would make you, me, and everyone else on this board look dumb combined. I don't get into the nitty grittys with them I just ask them how it works, I could care less about covalent bonds and molecules. 3M is the leader for a reason you know haha.

How do they get the non-stick coating to stick to the pans in your kitchen?

They bake it on, kinda like powder coating.

Do a little research on your own. I am one of those "science" types. You got scammed.

Teflon® PTFE (DuPont): [: a polymer of the monomertetrafluoroethylene]

Teflon®will help ‘spread ability’ (but then so do silicone oils) it does nothing for durability because of its required application method-although Teflon® is an exceptional product when used as intended; it provides no benefit in a wax or polish.

a) According to G.R. Ansul of DuPont's Car Care Products, Specialty Products Division, "The addition of a Teflon® flouropolymer resin (PTFE) does nothing to enhance the properties of a car wax.

We have no data that indicates the use of Teflon® fluoropolymer resins is beneficial in car waxes, and we have not seen data from other people that support this position." Manufacturers of gimmicky, over-hyped products sometimes claim that their products contain Teflon®, hoping that the consumer will believe there is something special about that product.

Ansul also notes that, "Unless Teflon® is applied at 700 degrees F, and using a dissolving chemical C8, it is not a viable ingredient, and is 100 percent useless in protecting the paint's finish." This is hot enough that your car's paint (let alone your car) wouldn't survive.
