AUTOMATIC TRANSFER CASES

These transfer cases have a 2HI, Auto-4WD, 4HI, 4LO and Neutral position and would fall in the general 4WD category. This transfer case has the operating characteristics of both an On Demand AWD and a Part-Time 4WD system depending on the mode selected. This transfer case uses a clutch pack to allow for a difference in speed between the front and rear axles in the Auto-4WD mode. In the 4HI or 4LO modes, there is no allowance for the difference in speed between the front and rear axles.

 

Driving in AUTO is no different than driving an ALL WHEEL DRIVE.

You didn't get that from a description of the system in these trucks.

 

They are NOT like the AWD system that used to be available in Denali.

I certainly did. That is an excerpt from GM description of various 4wd and AWD systems in use in GM vehicles.

They are pretty damn close to an awd system in the auto setting

When I had my 68 bronco if you turned the wheels too hard in 4wd it would kind of chug till the wheels straightened out. I used to hate getting out and turning the locking hubs on.

your comparing your 4wd to a truck thats 40years newer lmao

Actually this is the info GM provides now. This is how the GM 4wd transfer cases have worked for years. When in Auto the system loads the transfer case clutches around 10%, then the moment the system detects slippage it locks the front diff fully and stays that way until the decay time elapses and then goes back to the 10% loading under Auto.

What i am wondering is does the front diff lock in regular 4hi/lo or 4lo only. Might have over looked it in my owners manual

 

But i run auto pretty much when I know i need extra traction for any reason. And the factory tires means you can spin pretty easy. With the tc engaged or make them bark on decent throttle., its not fun at all,

 

How long does it normally take for 4x4 to engage? i do know my dads 06 chevy 3500 8.1 auto with manual transfer case once the light is on its on. Mine says 4x4 in progress and it goes away pretty quick. but I wait until the light on the knob gets done flashing.

The front diff locks anytime that 4wd is selected (it has to, or no power would make it to the wheels). In the auto 4wd trucks, the transfercase acts as the differential to prevent tire scrub.

 

I've driven over 600 miles in 4wd before (manual transfercase, not auto)...never saw bare ground the entire trip.

Thank you I heard some manufacturers were linited slip, I guess my source was wrong. Haven't had a 4wd system for a long time

Locking the front axle disconnect is different than a locking differential.

 

Maybe I misunderstood your question...lockers and limited slip differentials are not common (in a front axle), reserved for those oddballs (the Dodge Power Wagon, the Jeep Rubicon, etc.). They typically aren't used because of their inherent "bad" handling characteristics.

In All Wheel Drive trucks, have components so the transfer case section can act like a differential.

 

In out trucks, binding is prevented by the system disengaging when it detects if doesn't need to drive the front wheels.

 

When the auto function detects slip and engages, the driveline in these trucks will be engaged the same as in 4 Hi

 

The auto 4WD system is not the same as an AWD system
