how many feel the gmt-800 was better built than the 900?

Earlier this year I traded my 2005 yukon Denali in for a 2007 Escalade ESV. I was in for an oil change and while waiting I decided to browse their inventory teasing the sales people. My 05 was paid off and we absolutely loved it. I found this truck in the back waiting to get preped for the show room floor, so I decided to play the number game and they offered me 2k more for my trade than I had originally paid for it and the ESV had a four page long service record of every service suggested completed (it was the owners wifes truck). I bit since the trunk space with the third row up sucked in the yukon and with a second kid on the way it just made sense. I personally feel more cramped in this body style and the ergonomics of the truck are nothing compared to the 800. Doors even felt more solid in my 05. Hell I even feel the ride is better in the 800 but that is a trade for the sportier feel of the 900. Now that you have read my rant I am just courious if some of you feel the same?

I have worked on and driven several '99-'07 800's. Other than they lack the awful AFM, they are worse in almost every way compared to the 900's. I never liked them.

I love my 800 but I haven't driven a 900 for comparison. This has been a very reliable truck for me and has done every single thing I've asked of it so it'll be around as long as its still moving

Driven a 95, 98, 00, 01, 02, 03, my 04, work 04, 06, 08, work 09, 11, 13, and a couple 14's and for comfort and stronger feeling truck, the 800 is my pick.

I've owned both. The 800 series definitely had better sheet metal, paint, and more comfortable interior. I also feel like the 5.3 ran better in the 800's before it had it nuts cut off by GM in the 900 with the nannys and AFM.

Ran my 01 Z through a fence going 40 mph took out pine trees and went down into a massive ditch and came out the other side in 2wd. One whole side of my truck was totaled basically. 900 bucks worth of parts latter from the junkyard and the help of a buddy and it was back in pretty dam good shape. Truck tracked straight after the accident to, only thing broke was the body damage. Been an amazing truck to me couldn't ask for a better one.

The 800 have deffinatly stood the test of time. Prior ti 05 when enlisted I use to reman atleast 2 800 series a week for two years. As for my 2012 pick up in my opinion it is the cats meow but still has some to learn from its older brother.

I haven't driven many 900's. I didn't like the AFM the few times it actually kicked in. The ride seems "hollow" to me unless they're lifted.

My 2006 has its little issues. But I like driving it and it keeps humming right along.

I think my 07 Classic Sierra was a better truck then my 13 Sierra and I know i'll get flammed for this but my 08 F150 was better then both my Sierra's IMO

Seems like you are comparing 800 SUVs to 900 PU? So I will do the same. We liked our Yukon but the handling sucked, 5.3 engine was a dog and except for the seats the interior was cheap as hell. The '11 900 PU handles better, the drivetrain is much better for power and response and the interior is much nicer. Yes it PO's me that they decontented the 900 and I had to add stuff back at extra expense.

I have a 900 suv and pick up now bur I have driven both and owned the 800 suv. When I was working at the body shop I was driving a 02 extended cab Z71 and it was a hoss with the 6.0. The truck was a great driving truck

All it can say is I like both and think the 900 series seems "tighter". With all that being said, the only thing that does not work/broke on my truck are the volume and tuner lights in the control knobs. Now the knobs still work fine to turn up the music and tune the station, but when you turn on the lights they no longer light up. It's good I know where they are when I drive in the dark!

I recently got rid of my 2001 Burb - 1500, 5.3, 4.10, 4X4, LT, 185k miles, had it for 8 years - and picked up a 2008 Suburban 2500 - 6.0, 3.73, 3LT, 4X4, 85K miles.

Granted, it's not quite a fair comparison going from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton truck. And my point of view is obviously more skewed to the SUVs, not the pickups.

From a purely towing standpoint, I'd love to have a GMT800 2500 with the 8.1.

From every other perspective, IMHO, the GMT900 is superior. I love the 6.0 mated to the 6-speed. Interior is much nicer in the 900, though my daughter prefers the 3rd row of the 800. And the more-modern options - remote start, stability control, heated seats, navigation, sound system - are just the whipped cream and cherry on top.

I loved my 2001 Burb. I think I'm going to love this new one more.

ETA - I'm taking my first long roadtrip with the TT (30', 6500 lbs) in a few weeks. I'm excited to see how this new(er) truck pulls it.

I'm gonna say yes on this one 900 is too plasticky (my new word) compared to an 800 granted yes the 800 has plastic but it is a heavier duty and has a more solid feeling for the interior, IMO.

The GMT800 was a HUGE turnoff for me with GM Trucks. I had a 94 K1500 I absolutely loved. I never liked the 800's... Around here the rockers rust out and on our work trucks the 900's have held up much better than the 800's (All 07 models)
