Additional/Extended Warranties

Hey everyone. Just picked up my Sierra SLT a couple of weeks ago. It was a long drawn out process to get it here but I think it was worth it. At the time, I was persuaded to get the extra warrantee, something I never usually do, and since the, I've been kicking myself for getting it. According to my paperwork, I have 60 days to reverse my decision on the extended warrantee but with some of the problems that some of you on here are having, I'm wondering if I should be keeping it or if some of these problems are maybe GM's new model pains. So I'm throwing it out there to see how many of you have purchased then extended warrantee.

Cheers

I was offered it at dealer cost, I turned them down. I can't recall what the price was but it was under $800.

I extended mine to 48 months or 48K miles. Cost $998. Don't know if that was a rip-off or not, but .... a little more peace of mind I guess.

Being that this was a 1st year run truck and all the new electronics I opted for the extended warranty this time around. I have never purchased it in the past. Can't remember the price but it covers everything (I hope)for 5 years. I am usually out of warranty by time instead of mileage anyway.

Extended warrantys are generally a rip off. They are nothing but an insurance policy. Look at it this way..If they sell you a warranty for $1000, they are banking on the odds that there will be no claims greater than that during the warranty period. After all, you have 3/36 bumper to bumper, and 5/100,000 power train. In my experience, and I have been suckered into these in the past, more than likely, anything really expensive will break AFTER the warranty period. Take the $1000, put it in the bank...interest aint much, but, more than likely you wont need it, and if you do, it will probably not be a $1000 issue. Then at the end of the warranty period, take the money and run!

FYI extended warrantees are usually not worth the paper they are printed on. I have experience with them as I own an independent repair facility and have had to deal with them on multiple occasions. #1 read the fine print! You may think you have a "bumper to bumper" warranty but that is hardly if ever the case. If the part is not explicitly stated in the covered components they will not cover it. They have names like "platinum coverage" "high tech coverage" and the like and generally the salesman sells it as if it will cover any issue that pops up like the factory warranty it will not! They push them because the selling dealer gets a commission for the sale.

#2 there usually is a deductible which negates any small repairs being covered.

#3 They will only pay for the cheapest quality parts. Case in point I had a customer with a 2006 Impala with a bad water pump @ 67000mi that had the genuine GM extended warranty. They would not approve the updated new GM OEM part but quoted it based on an aftermarket reman pump. On top of that they only paid a discounted labor rate. I mean come on??? for them it would be like taking part of the money out of one pocket and putting it in the other. But no they only authorized $168.11 on a $505.56 repair. I gave the customer the option of putting a cheap pump on it but he opted for the OE pump and paid the difference.

I had another occasion with the GM warranty that wouldn't pay to put in a GM hub assembly. If you have ever had the displeasure of speaking to one of these warranty companies claims adjusters trying to get something covered you wouldn't give it a second thought skipping it IMHO

I use to be a proponent of GMPP's. Depends on driving conditions.

On my 2011 GMC, I did a 5 year 40k mile warranty, zero deductible. I traded in the truck with 19k miles and received a prorated refund of $239. I only paid $400 for the warranty.

I had a 2009 Pontiac G6 I used for a company car. I bought the 6 year 75k, zero deductible warranty. Paid $600 for that one. With 09 being the last year of Pontiac, I thought it was a good idea. I traded the car in 75k miles and bought a Chevy Cruze Eco. I got my money's worth on the warranty. Both front ball joints were replaced, the ECU module and a few other things. It was a good car, and I bet GM covered $2k in repairs.

On my 2014, I opted out this time. I trade every 2-3 years.

You can google GMPP, and there are dealerships that will email you offers for coverage. My dealer always matched the lower price, he explained to me that the FInance department can win trips based of volume of those sold, not profit. What not help someone out.

That should be a huge red flag to anyone wanted to shell out cash for one. These things are pure profit.

I have yet to buy anything that wasn't pure profit for someone

Where are you buying these warranty's from? Normally through the selling dealer is pretty expensive. Ive looked online and an additional 4 year 64K zero deductible warranty added to the standard 3yr/36k is around $1800 online.

i bought the 6 year 100k miles on my '14, cost around $1,800 still in my 60 day period though, is that a good deal?

The only extended warranty I take out is the Tire and wheel replacement warranty. I live in an area with heavy construction. My previous truck also had that coverage and I shredded 3 tires and 1 wheel during a 1 year period and had them all replaced with new. no questions asked and no pro rate or deductible. I now have dealer installed aftermarket Wheels at 300 a pop and Nitto terra grapplers which are probably not cheap either so I opted for the warranty again.

A great deal for the seller. Looks like you bit at or above list price.

where can i find the list price, i can still cancel since i haven't got my truck yet and i'm within 60 days.

I purchased extended warranty of 6 year or 72,000 mile, $100.00 dollar deductible for $1,100 for each of our trucks. Bought at the time of purchase through the dealer.

With 6 computers onboard the new Sierra the extended warranty covers you in case you need it. I got the 10yr 100K coverage $100 deduct wavied if the repair is performed at the dealership, its transferable for a $50 dollar fee. We had a Caddy ('01) and the extended warranty paid for its self several times over.
