I do not have this issue on my '06 silverado. What did they change in the process?

Nothing that we can tell. Just seems to be a bad batch of trucks in the 2014's....possibly a frame preparation issue before the frame was dipped. My 2007 Silverado had no issue with this and my dad's 2003 Suburban still looks great. Since I discovered my 2014 peeling and rusting, I've been examining every Silverado I see in parking lots when I drive around. Every previous body style looks fine. The 2014's are hit or miss. I'm getting mine fixed tomorrow I'll keep everyone posted and try to put up some before and after pictures.

Its not a bad batch. My brothers 2012 denali 2500 did the same thing immedietly. It will be getting the TSB applied to it as well. My 2004 had 5 times the thickness of this wax coating on its frame so of course it held up better, which it did. if u dont live in the salt belt, u wont notice half as much.

Yeah I'm in Virginia so we don't get as much salt down here. But again my 2007 had no issues in 7 years, maybe a small spot here and there, but my 2014 is peeling in multiple areas and I've only had it for 2 months. Maybe rather than a bad batch it depends more on where the coating is installed?

I am on the Atlantic coast of Florida and we have some of the most corrosive environment imaginable all year round here due to salt spray and high heat and humidity. The other day I saw a 2011 Impala LTZ that was parked outside near the beach all its life and the OEM clear coated wheels were completely encrusted with corrosion, in fact I have never seen a set of wheels this badly corroded on any vehicle that I can remember. They looked like they sat on the ocean bottom for 6 months.

We have a 2012 Silverado 4X4 crew cab at work that sits parked about 100 yeards from the beach and it is already rusting all over the chassis. This environment is absolutely brutal for any vehicle. I have seen cars and truck roofs rust completely off when parked near the beach. We had some Dodge vans in the past whose side window frames and hood cowlings rusted completely off. And even plastic chromed parts corrode around here.

In fact , the US Army set up a corrosion lab on the Cape Canaveral beach to test their anti-corrosion automotive coatings. Why this location? Because according to them, this was the most corrosive environment they could find in the US.

Of course, as you move several miles away from the beach, the harmful effects of the environment decrease markedly.

Looks like the manufacturer of the stuff. I think the last manufacturer of the wax coating was proform, this stuff that's on the 2014 is much thinner (just like the paint and clearcoat) It also depends on the weather. I had this issue going back to 2005, but I live in one of the most harsh environments with one of the greatest temp variances on this planet.

Do you know who the new manufacturer is and/or when they switched? A coworker has a 2013 Suburban that is having some rust issues. Is there a source for this information? I'm not doubting you I just want to see if I can have some "information ammo" in case the dealership starts to play hardball.

I dont know for sure who the manufacturer is for the wax on the 2014, It is a diffrent coating from previous years. We have always supplied(my workplace) dealers with Proform coating http://www.proformproducts.com/en/products/info/?product=27&category=4, I have scrapped the new stuff off the 2014 and Its diffrent from the older generation. Thats all I can tell you.

I'm not sure if you know this answer or not but assuming I buy a tub of that Proform, is it easy just to slop it on the frame with a paint brush if I notice other areas pealing? Obviously cutting off the peeled flakes and removing any rust first.

You HAVE TO prep the frame, you have to take the old stuff off(sand) and paint brush the new stuff on.

Right so say I have a 4"x4" spot on the frame that pealed off. Can I just sand that one spot and apply the Proform to that one spot? What if I get the Proform on the surrounding wax that wasn't peeling?

yes, make sure that other wax is clean you can go over it with proform

Cool I may have to invest in a tub of that stuff then.

To buy or not to buy, on the last week to order a 2014. This frame coating is a big concern (live in Upstate NY), lots of salt. Anyone recently pick up their new truck, how's the coating look? Wondering if this is just on the first half production batch or just a "bad" process all together??
