Water leak in the roof

I was told the cost would be about $350-400 to replace the antenna with a new one.

Seeing as my truck was 3 months out of the original 3/36 warranty the dealer charged me $75. (Seems that it is the dealer that assisted me in the price break, not GM.)

 

Seems that GM views this antenna as a trim item and my GM extended warranty doesn't cover trim. It's not a piece of trim! its an antenna GM!!

 

I would suggest to anyone that has a truck within the original 3 year warranty still active and notices that the gap in the gasket for the antenna is on the back side to see about getting it replaced with one that has it in the front towards the windshield because it's not IF it will leak, just a of matter When it starts to leak and cause more issues.  Can't imagine what it would cost to replace a water-damaged headliner.

Haven't had SXM for days now, had a date for the dealer tomorrow but came out of a store and wham.. it worked.  Same scenario as when I lost it.

Trust me, I believe you but it goes against reason as to why the gap in the front would be better than the gap in the back...there shouldn't be a gap at all but that's just me. With a gap in front it would seem that water would be "pushed" in by the air forcing it in but maybe the little aero shape somehow sucks water in from the back?

UPDATE: I just checked mine and the gap is in the front. Build date 08/09/2018

I read that someone had the gap on the back and it leaked again. Mine was also replaced with the gap in the back. No leak again yet but I expect it will. It’s the sitting in the rain that lets water creep through the seal, I bet. I’m going to seal it with silicone to try and avoid the next leak. I don’t want to find out the hard way. I read someone on here had sealed it that way and it worked. I wish I’d had them put the seal in the front.

I would suggest anyone with the gap at the back to seal it up. A small dab of silicone should do the trick.  I actually stuck a small piece of foam weatherstrip in the gap on mine before I could have it replaced to avoid taking a chance of more water entering into the truck.

I  know it doesn't seem to make sense to have that gap in the gasket at all, or to the front but at least if there is any water under the antenna at least it will drain out of the gap in the front unlike with the gap in the rear of the antenna where it would not drain at all.

Had a new fin and cable to the radio replaced.  The gap on this fin is at the front vice the rear on the original.  I note that GM has the fins pre-painted in stock, as if they intend to replace a lot of them.  I checked a few other new trucks on the lot and the gap was facing front.

Amazingly GM this problem still exists on a 2017.  I haven't confirmed it yet but it is pouring here and I have water dripping on my left hand - again.  The problem seems to go away when I start thinking about taking it in to teh dealer. 

 

This atmospheric gasket technology must be beyond the grasp the the GM engineering team.  A 400hp diesel that will go for over 100K miles - Good.  Some sticky rubber - Not so good.

The fix is to replace the antenna and before you install the new one, put a bead of clear silicone around the outside of the foam seal.

Like many of the other people. I'm not made of money.  Had this water leak problem 2 years ago when truck was only 2 years old. Dealer said they fixed the 3rd brake light and the seal around the shark fin satellite. Then try to give me my truck half full of mold to drive my 2 young children home in. Forced them to change the seat belts and detail it.  Now 2 years later My truck is half full of mold and water in the exact same places. But it gets better the original dealer wants to charge me to have the same thing done because it's out of warranty now and GM  Isn't willing to do anything after over 2 hours on the phone with them.

If you can prove its mold, then get a lawyer and I guarantee GM will call you and have it fixed.
