OEM Navigation questions

I've used it for one trip so far to a rural area. It worked well in the boonies, it had all the roads and worked where there was no cell service so Google on my phone couldn't keep up. I did have one spot where it told me to turn left off a main road, but it was a right side exit with a loop that it didn't have mapped. Other than that I was happy with the way it worked.

I've used it in rural, suburban, and urban. It seems to work well. I really like the 3D while in the city.

Thanks fot the input! I had a feeling the salesman I talked with was wrong. He said the updates automatically happen over the air. I'm still debating whether or not to buy the nav when I get my truck, or go with a portable one.

You can't go wrong with a Garmin. If you think about it, how often are you going someplace you're unfamiliar with? Garmin with lifetime map updates is so much easier. I don't even mount it to my windshield--I just lay it in the console and it keeps the satellite without fail. I made a round trip from Portland Oregon to New Orleans and the Garmin worked like a champ. Save your money!

This is exactly right! Garmin is the way to go

I agree as well. The Nav in the truck is garbage compared to my Garmin 660. GM Nav doesn't even have lane assist. I've also found the estimated time of arrival in the Nav is away off when it's first calculated. It eventually gets it right when you finally arrive at your destination though. :nonod:

I find it is plenty detailed and I have driven up and down New England with it, my grips with the nav are a) that you cannot enter an address and save it to a "favorite" (my $100 gamin does this), and b) it seems a little slow to react to inputs & has cut out a couple times but has always come back- in fact the entire intellilink has blacked on me before. Maybe there's a software update?

I will say it has never failed to locate an address I have entered and seems to do that pretty quickly. I do appreciate that it will automatically complete the balance of an address just by starting the first couple numbers

You can save addresses as favorites. With the address displayed in the nav menu swipe the screen from the bottom up to access the favorites. Then hold the number and once it beeps tap the address. It works the same way for phone numbers as well. Just to point out the favorites are the same for radio, nav, and phone and I think your limited to 60 total.

I tried using mine for the first few weeks I had the truck... IMO it's garbage. The nav system in my 2003 Accord and my six year old Garmin both worked better. Really wishing I had skipped the nav option and waited for the aftermarket. Walt at ADC (http://www.adcmobile.com/) said they'll be releasing a nav add-on for K2 trucks soon. Hopefully it'll be better and under $1000.

If you're interest in adding nav (GM's or aftermarket) to a 2014, they have a pretty big topic on the subject in the Acc/Mods sub-forum here: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/154438-upgrading-the-chevy-mylink-system-for-navigation/

I am surprised you find it this bad. Up here in Canada, where normally the nav systems are so out of date (2013 Santa Fe, Garmin, Tom Tom and a Alpine Unit I had were all bad), I am finding the one in the 2014's to be pretty good. Points of Interest can be somewhat iffy if it is a new place or has moved (to be expected) but entering an address I have had no issues.

Anyone use it in rural areas? Does it show back country roads, forests, mountains, streams, etc? Are other maps like topo compatible? Are free updates included? If so, how is this accomplished? Love it? Hate it?

It shows rural roads in western Canada, but that is pretty much it! Trouble with the factory GPS is that if you want to keep it updated you have to buy a new disc every couple of years. Your average Garmin is better I think. I have the nav in one of my trucks but even when I am traveling with it I still use my Garmin because I can update in on my computer and I have more faith that it is accurate.

I rate the GM Nav as average-at best. It does some things OK but some below average. To me it looks like shortcuts were taken or incomplete product resulted from rushing this to market prematurely. Might get better?

The ideal would be to add a Google or Apple app for Nav. This is my 4th factory Nav and none are in the same league as Garmin, Google or Apple for ease of use or quality of function.

Is there any way to display the current street name while in full screen mode? The only way i can get it to do this is show current location and it takes up half the screen!

Mine sucks! I used it on the way home from purchasing the truck (Illinois to Alabama) once I was close to my home, instead of ending the directions since I knew where I was, I just let it continue and it kept trying to turn me in the opposite direction. I live in a pretty populated area, in a fairly new subdivision (4-5 years old) and my none of the streets show up on my Nav.

Such a shame you have these screens in the trucks and you have to pay so much to get to the level where you have nav function then it's not as good as a 100 dollar garmin..... But I'd trade off a bit just to not have something suction cupped to my window

I only use a GPS maybe 20 days a year. I never had a truck with the built-in although the last purchase the dealer offered to install it. But at $2k I passed. This new truck which I will get tomorrow has nav. I like the idea of a built-in. But for hunting uses a Garmin with a topographic map data load can't be matched when on the two tracks.

My Garmin has always worked perfectly just sitting on the console between the seats. Has never lost satellite. I don't suction cup it.

Check your distance setting. If it's too far out it won't show smaller roads.

Can't remember how to end nav since I've only used it once so far on my way home.
