Aftermarket seat heaters installed in my 2011 Sierra SLE

Finally tackled the seat heater installation in my 2011 GMC Sierra SLE last weekend. After a week I'm glad I did. They work great! The wife especially appreciates the bun warmers. I did a custom button installation that required a bit of material removal behind the center dash trim panel, but I was happy with the results. Total cost was $64 ($40 for the seat heater kit for two seats and $24 for an additional relay and associated connectors and wiring). (BTW, in the photos, the drivers' side is on high and the passenger side is on low)

Nice job on the switches. I installed a seat heater on the drivers side of my PU but I dont have the guts to drill a hole in the dash bezel. I just have the switch pulled out from under the console on the floor right now. I will have to figure out something a bit more permanent after it warms up a bit. Maybe I should just buy a spare dash bezel and have at it like you did?

That way, if I don't like it or mess it up, no big deal. Thanks for the idea though. I also have to get the passenger side seat heater installed. My wife will appreciate it as I am quick to announce, when it is -5 degrees outside, that my butt is nice and warm already.

 

I think the seat heater mod is a great mod, especially when you factor in the low relative cost. The biggest obstacle is the installation which essentially requires that you remove the seats from the truck. I wish I had done this mod in September instead of January.

 

I just got the OEM GM Factory remote start installed yesterday....another worthy mod for us up north folk. And if you shop around, it isn't nearly as expensive as you might think. I got it done for $185 total for the Factory GM system.

Dude, what's the info on the seats here? Brand and such, and also, is it just the bottom or the back also? Cool mod, I know I would like to do this!

Purchased the kit on Amazon ("2 Seats Carbon Fiber Seat Heater Kits"); paid $30 plus $10 shipping. I think it now is $39.99 with free shipping. This is for both seats, bottom and back, with 3-way switches (off, low and high), fuses, relays and wiring harnesses. I had to purchase an additional relay (Advance Auto generic 12v 30a SPST relay) as GM doesn't seem to provide any switched power points with enough current capacity and I definitely wanted the power cut when the truck is off. And, yes, it was a ton of work. Removing the seats was a bear, but the really hard part is pulling off and then re-installing the leather upholstery to install the heating elements. Took me about a day and a half to complete.

and yes, those are both seats and the seat as well as backrest.

 

Here is a video I used for pulling the seats and removing the seat covers necessary for installing the seat heaters. The videos are actually from a Seat Shop for installing custom seat covers but they are great for showing the process of removing the seats from the truck and taking off the stock seat covers which you need to do to install the seat heaters.

I used the MBEC - IP Junction Box. It is right behind the parking brake on the firewall. It has a black cover on it. pin 7 or 8 in block X14

I had heated seats installed in my truck last fall. I found an installer in my area from the Check Corporation (http://www.checkcorp.com/) website. I paid $150 a seat for the install (back and seat). I didn't want mess with removing the leather myself. I had the switches (same ones as RT66er) installed on the lower side of the seat near the power seat switches. I wanted them installed in the dash as well, but couldn't trust having the installer mess in my dash not knowing if they would be right or if the dash would crack later. The lowers seat position was the same location in my '99 Yukon.

Nice job! I have aftermarket heaters as well no programming or anything required and far cheaper.. I put my switches on the side of the seat

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
