2500HD leafs on a 1500

I have a 2008 z71 4x4 sierra. May upgrade in the near future, but regardless of if it's a '08 1500 or a newer 1500....is it possible to put 2500HD springs on a 1500? If so, are there any other upgrades that should be performed with that addition.

I'm sure you know what I mean.....it's like getting a huge motor and having crappy brakes. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something for the rear.

I currently have super springs (helper springs) in the back now....but I think I'll get quite a bit more capacity if I go with a 2500HD springs? Thoughts?

The springs will work, but the weak link would be the axle and brakes.

What is it your trying to do here? More height? Stiffen rear end for towing/hauling?

Primarily stiffening the rear for more hauling. Didn't think adding more leafs (or bigger ones) would help me with towing so much. Truck squats pretty easily with 1200 or so pounds in it. I don't really need the capability of a 3/4 ton payload capacity.....it's a nice jump......but I'd to get more payload out of it without killing my truck. I use it for everything.....I mean everything....but even a load of firewood is a bit much for it. I know there will be a bunch of folks that will brag about how much they can put in their 1/2 tons, but there is a reality factor too. stepping up to a 3/4 ton is significantly more $$$ too. I may do it, but a few modifications would be a bit cheaper. So can I get a heavier axle on a 1/2 ton.....if it's needed?

Not too much help here but I can tell you my father installed 2500 leafs on his '98 Z71 to help with towing his heavy boat. The boat was within the towing capacity but he didn't like how the truck felt when he towed, he liked the stiffer feel with the 3/4 ton leafs. He also loaded it up with a full bed of wood quite often as well. Truck has 235K on it now and is till kicking.

500 lbs difference is all that is between a 1/2 and 3/4t,,,,get helper springs and drive it ,,,,dont think to deep into what ya want ,,,,imo

Helper springs. Add a leaf kits. Check out oversized jounce bumpers made by Timbren. Switch out with 2500 springs if you can find some. Any of these are options.

If it was only 500 lbs difference in a 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton payload...trust me, I wouldn't be thinking about this at all. I agree with you.

The difference between the 1/2 and 3/4 (at least back in 2008) is just shy of 2000 lbs.

You cannot legally increase the manufacturer's payload amount located on the yellow and white sticker inside your driver's door jam. If you haul overloaded-you will leave yourself open to lawsuits, both on a criminal standpoint and a civil standpoint if you have an at-fault accident. (Yea-I know nobody ever has an accident-right?).

If you have an at-fault accident and you harm or kill someone you will be sued civilly and your life will change forever.

Is it worth it? Dude...buy a bigger truck.

Wow.....if people get a hold of this, it's going to put a lot of 'add a leaf', air bag, etc., etc., etc. companies right out of business. Basically modifying a truck is out of question. Gotta go by the yellow and white sticker. Can't get my head around the magnitude of this. Any modification will be just for looks.

You misunderstood. You can modify your truck.....but you can't exceed payload.......legally-without ramifications should something happen. Another interesting conversation would be calling up your insurance agent and telling them your ignoring the manufacturer's recommendations as regards to the capacities of the truck on a regular basis, and seeing what they would say.

    • You refuse to own anything made in this century yet you reportedly own... a 2007 Silverado, which is now almost 20 years old. The dissonance.... turn up your hearing aid?   You clearly don't understand the government contracting process, brother. We send people to die on front lines, keep the public safe, and make people's husbands, wives, children enter burning buildings with equipment from .....wait for it.....   ...the lowest bidder....   Just because something is used for a long time doesn't mean it's good. But it might be cheap and plentiful.   Please, continue to whine about new trucks in a thread dedicated to new trucks, which you've said you'll never own. We get it. Go tell everyone how you're stuck in time on a Panther forum. I mean, Jesus, an 86 isn't even one of the good Panthers.
    • It really is comical when people don’t agree or see the reason some people prefer the older vehicles. They become condescending. All the while they may be busting their knuckles on old vehicles. I have found memories of swapping out engines in my old GM cars in a weekend without much hassle. Unlike today. One wrong move a computer will shut you down. Even on something as easy as a brake job. There’s a pretty comical YouTuber called the car wizard. A garage owner who puts it all in perspective. Another Vicegrip garage that’s shows just how tough the old stuff is.
    • I was around and remember that era very well, so I'm calling b/s on that statement. If they were that bad no police department or taxi company would've bought a single one ... but they were used in both services (and fire) for DECADES. They were bulletproof and proven. Even the early 21st century ones weren't too bad! The early models were legendary.   Mine is proof, but people like atlas are blinded by agenda and refuse to believe facts right before their very eyes.   Even decades after they were built, a new generation started driving them, posting all their builds and shenanigans on Grandmarq.net and Crownvic.net. The failures would show up then, since they all were deep past 100k-150k miles by that point, and younger drivers tend to be a little aggressive, especially with vehicles than can lay a one-tire fire for as long as you hold your foot in it. They've more than proven themselves over the decades.   The only thing that'll really take them out is road salt. The bodies and sheet metal were garbage. A victim of the cheapout FoMoCo and GM have been partaking in before then, and since.   Today it's the stuff that counts - the undercarriage that rots away first!    GMs Caprice was no slouch either. Reliable as a stone ax - the opposite of what they build now.
    • Let me know how your vehicles do in 10 years. You don't know ******, kid. 😂    There's a reason that Panther platform was used as police, fire, and taxi service for DECADES ... long before you were born, apparently.
    • If your connector also has a big lever to get the connector on and off, you don't want to force the lever either way, as it becomes a bigger problem if you bust the lever or the mechanism it works.
