VIN starts with 3, it's a Mexican build. 1 is US. Window sticker lists plant location and there should be a UAW sticker in the driver door frame too.

So is there a way to tell which plant they come from? Something in the vin or on the engine or tranny itself?

AFAIK only the assembly plant can be identified, unless the part/assembly happens to have a label on it like the frame.

 

A guess would be that the eng/trans etc come from the closest powertrain plant -- but then where did the powertrain plant get their components from? (eg- where was the foundry that forged the rods for the engine plant in Tonawanda?)

 

You'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out!

2015 1500 Z71 Crew with 6'6" Bed is from Flint. Iam thinking the cRew with the standard bed is from Flint. My brothers 2010 2500 HD Crew with the std bed came from Flint also.

Nope. I've seen crew cab standard beds with a 3 VIN. All HD crew cabs are built at Flint.

Mexico (Silao plant) only builds 1500 crew.

 

Fort Wayne builds 1500 DC and reg cab.

 

Flint builds HD's and has flexibility for 1500's.

 

I suspect (but don't know for sure) that the 1500 max tow trucks will come from Flint, due to door differences for the tow mirrors.

Mexican built 2015 Sierra Crew Cab, 2300 miles and no problems (knock on wood) so far.

Double cab built in Flint on 12/13. The usual recalls along with vibrations on the interstate that was slightly fixed by balancing tires and a squeaking gas peddle that was fixed by adding foam padding.

Silverado LTZ Crew Standard Bed built in Mexico, no issues.

2010 Silas assembly 4wd crew cab, lr window inop, air bag control under passenger seat corroded, oil sensor inop, rr vents squeak everytime I go over a bump, paint chipping off, rust behind front wheels, cruise control just stopped working (why I'm here right now) 190kms on the clock, looking for 300. This truck has had all regular maintenance done at dealership.

There are no door differences AND the tow mirrors can be ordered on any 1/2ton.

Assembled in Roanoke, IN at the Ft Wayne plant and no problems thus far with 6700 miles.

There are according to the bulletin GM published regarding retrofitting tow mirrors to trucks that had standard mirrors from factory.

 

But the differences do not prevent tow from being installed -- just a warning that mirror vibration may be higher than 'desired'.
