First Oil Change?

Should I run until the computer tells me to change the oil, or should I have it changed early on for engine break-in around 1000 miles or so?

I changed the oil on my 2010 GMC Sierra 5.3L when it had a little over 800 miles on it. I wanted to let the motor break in and change the oil due to the assembly lube inside the motor. I've ran Mobil 1 and an AcDelco PF63 oil filter ever since then.

Technically I don't believe you need to, GM engineered them pretty well. I just wanted clean fresh oil that way I know what is truly in my engine. Also because I'm anal about this kinda stuff.

I changed mine at about 1500 miles and sent an oil sample to blackstone labs, the report showed some iron and silicone, but nothing major. I'd suggest that you change it around 1000-1500 miles.

1st - I bought the truck from an out of state dealer. Are the "free" oil changes for the first year good for any GMC dealer? Or does it have to be through the dealership you bought your car?

2nd - Is anybody here doing their first oil change at around 1000 miles, as has been the practice in new cars for a while? or is that a thing of the past? My truck is getting close to 1000 miles now, and that feeling is kicking in that I should change the oil.

3rd - Synthetic oil. I know everyone has opinions on this, but has anyone actually seen improved MPG after switching? Any benefits other than longer oil life and longer between changes?

Thanks in advance.

You will not notice any substantial MPG differences between conventional and synthetic oils. In fact, I thought to achieve the 0W20 weight it had to be partial synthetic anyway, so there's not really any "switching" involved. Besides, GM spec'd Dexos 0W20 is advertised as "High Efficiency oil", so I bet that all brands/types will perform nearly identically.

I'm approaching 5000 miles and haven't changed my oil yet. I still have like 40% on the OLM. I'm probably going to bring it in soon though as that seems like a lot of miles on new oil.

Any dealer can do the free changes - it's a GM offer, not a dealer thing.

Changed the oil and replaced with magnetic drain plugs at 500 miles on my camaro and 750 miles on my silverado , glad I did cheap insurance and it was pretty dirty/dark

There is a lot of information on this sight pertaining to your situation. I suggest you use the search button because several users have even sent their oil off to Blackstone for analysis and from the findings, I would suggest not going the full extend of what your DIC is telling you, at least not during break in anyway.

That's a damn good idea, I will pick one up tomorrow. Do you remember if they were anything special on this new motor or if they are the same old 14mm used in prior years?

^ I changed the drain plug too, IIRC, the plug was M12x1.5.

Thank you

Are you sure it's an M12x1.5 pitch?

Another user on here got information from another drain plug source claiming that it is m12x1.75 pitch?

It works asuve3u6.jpgRyan

Do you remember which size plug you got Ryan?

As short a threads as it has to screw into, a 1.5 and 1.75 may interchange but I dont want to take a chance on damaging my oil plug threads.

I just called dealer, the 5.3 and 6.2 use a M12x1.75x25

Just double checked, the thread is indeed M12x1.75, I bought the plug from a local Autozone.9a9ebaqe.jpg

I did my own oil and filter change at 750 miles, drained oil was dark chocolate in color with a high concentration of metallic particles when stirred.........didn't need an oil analysis to see it needed to be changed.
