Last night the fam and I were headed home from a local event. REALLY bad traffic, "bumper to bumper" quite literally. I noticed that I was creeping VERY close to the car in front and I had no alerts. Began testing it, and I could have driven into the rear seat and no alerts. Went into settings and checked, and the front detection system WAS ON!!! (Thought maybe the kids had been playing with it) Wife witnessed, it was on. We were sitting still, veeeery close to car in front (he couldn't move, bbwwwaaahahaha!), I turned off front detection, turned back on, VOILA! Instant red alarms!!!

So, I guess moral of the story is don't trust the electronics. Watch the hood.

I'll be visiting the dealer for the consummate "No problem found" :(

well im glad you're paranoid about what will happen because of your vast knowledge on how things work ,,,,you are doomed to have any relationship with the dealer thinkin like that ,,,,,

good luck

Collision alert only works over a certain speed. At slow speeds you only have park assist. I think you're slightly confusing the two?

Was the little green/amber car showing up on the dash?

This may or may not have been the case with what you described, but in testing to see if it works people should keep in mind it's not a simple distance meter. It takes into account not only your speed but your closing speed on the car in front of you. Especially at low speeds, if you're matching the speed of the car ahead very closely, you can slowly creep up on it very closely without setting it off.

If the car in front of you slams on the brakes, it'll go off even if the car is a long way off--even farther at higher speeds. It's a fuzzy logic sort of thing trying to figure out what really puts you in the most danger--not a simple distance warning as it's sometimes described.

Like I said, yours may well not have been working but I thought it may be helpful for people out there to understand it a little better.

Hmmm...not sure I deserved that. I was merely attempting to warn others of a potential issue. If I've somehow offended please, do tell.

And "(I am) doomed to have any relationship with the dealer"??? I don't know if you are implying good or bad here, but how about I manage my relationship with my dealer, ok? Seems to be going pretty well thus far. Except they claim my garage door opener is working fine even after coming to the house in an unsuccessful attempt to program it themselves.

Absolutely, yes, park assist NOT collision alert. My bad, flubbed the two.

My bad, as Yukon pointed out I meant to say parking assist not collision det. But excellent explanation thx!

you're expecting no fault found ,,,,you said it ,,,,in other words ,you're thinkin they're dumb asses ,,,hence bad relationship =doomed from the beginning ,,,enjoy

Like Jon A said, it all depends on how fast your approaching, guy front of you is stopping fast etc. It won't go off just because your up close behind someone but it should show the little amber light in dash. I didn't think mine worked right at first, but its does. You do know you set the distance on it on the steering wheel.

Parking Assist - I have front and rear along with the camera...yes, it is worth it to me. Collision Alert - not so much. I have had many false alerts for things I would normally ignore, but yesterday there was someone coming across the center line and it DID get my attention quicker than normal. Most of the false alerts I have seen were when someone suddenly slowed to turn right with no warning. Happens frequently. I also have the Lane Departure Warning - son't use it in the city, but it has helped on a long trip.

I don't RELY on these tools, but they seem to have their place.

I can see where you came to the conclusion based on my comments alone, but what I was trying to imply was it's working now, and if ain't broke, can't fix it. I wasn't intending to imply incompetence on the part of the dealership, this will be a rather difficult thing for them to reproduce. However, as it's somewhat billed as a safety device I would hope (and I expect they will) address it as such. If any incompetence was implied it should have been directed at GM's QA/QC for their software.

Is this gimmick worth the money?

I'll bow out of the collision detection system as I don't own. The one test drive I had seemed to work very very well. I was impressed. Long term...may have become annoying.

As for the front parking assist, I park in a rather tight parking garage every day in a reasonably large vehicle. Worth every penny.

I use the lane departure in heavy rain storms at night. It sees the lane lines better than I do anymore.

I wouldn't totally depend on the back up camera either, nice to have but the little lines aren't exact.

I don't think my front parking assist is operating as it should either. I know it worked coming home from the dealer, and then we got some snow and ice that was built up on the front of the truck and now ever since then the alert hasn't gone off. I get the indicators on the dash showing objects in front of me, but no alert at all. The back however works perfectly fine.
