My dealer phoned me the other day and told me they have a few trucks lined up to get the frame fixed. Mine is 3rd in line. The first one they are doing is the General Manager's truck. I'm assuming they will try to do the best job they can on his truck and then they can do mine.

 

I'd really like to see before and after pics of the managers truck before I give them my truck.

I have a 2014 Silverado that just had the tsb done. The overall process was alright overall. I will say that I am alittle OCD about my vehicles so just throwing it out there lol. They did not hassle taking on the job at all which was nice, but I do have some complaints of the overall job done. They had the truck for I believe 3 total days. They did scrape off all of the wax coating and applied Norton rubberized undercoating to the whole frame. I do wish they removed the bed and rear bumper to do the job correctly in my opinion but they didn't. There are numerous spots of decent overspray which I am not happy about but the frame overall looks better than it was. Hope this kinda helps.... I will try to post some pictures at a later date.

I tried the Fluid Film on my frame back in November. I sprayed in on the part of the frame you can easily see in the rear wheel well. It was very tacky going on which is good, however I put my finger on it just to feel it and as I wipe it my frame coating came right with me. I had it on for about 3 weeks and washed my truck twice at the quarter car wash and also drove in a few rainstorms. There was some additional spots where the coating was kinda running off when it was all said and done.

 

I ended up having my entire truck Ziebarted. I did the full rust proofing. I'm satisfied, but a little unhappy with the quality (overspray). I spent a few hours with wax and tar remover getting the overspray off my wheels and paint. I opened the hood recently to empty my catch can and noticed that a lot of stuff under the hood has some over spray on it too, such as the Brake Fluid container, its very obvious there since that is a clear container. I noticed my mud flaps have some overspray too, no idea what I'll do to get that off yet. It's so minor though that no one would ever notice any of this except super anal detailers like myself. We'll see how this Ziebart plays out... may be a great investment or a big mistake, time will tell. I gotta go back once a year to keep the warranty.

 

Oh, and the interior of the truck is even quieter now.

 

I do plan on using Fluid Film still on my wheels and also the trailer hitch. I haven't sprayed either yet because of laziness. Thankfully the winter has been super mild here in SE MI, which is also bad because my snowmobile is just sitting.... :-(

Yes I've noticed my 2015 Silverado has a slight issue with the undercarriage coating, seems like either it wasn't applied right in some areas or those areas may not have been prepped correctly?? I'm an aircraft mechanic and we use this product called ardox AV8 and AV40, it's a tough corrosion proof coating which you can buy online and we use it to protect our planes from corrosion, I'm going to coat the whole underneath of my truck this weekend in hopes that it'll stop from a future rot out.. I'm also open to anyone else's ideas or methods... Winters coming lol

This is a pretty overblown claim that you've read. I've applied FF 3 times since I bought this truck and have had zero issues with it "taking the wax right off" like some swear it will. I'd be happy to provide more pictures. After coating the wax, it became slightly softer and seems to almost self-heal now, but still sticks to the frame just fine. The last thing you want is the factory wax to become hard. Hard wax likes to become brittle and either peel away frome the frame like we've seen in this thread, or worse, wick water and road salt between it and the steel frame, rotting the steel while looking like it's still protected by the coating.

 

I was just under my truck last week and found large areas under the bed that I missed while applying the FF and those areas look just like COP TZR's frame. The wax is flaking away and peeling at the edges of the cross members. So now I have to scrape all the wax off, apply rust converter, paint it, and hit it with FF. Why would I apply the same shitty wax that failed to do it's job the first time, not only on my truck but every guy that's been to this thread for help. That's just stupidity. It's not like the K2XX trucks suddenly have an issue with wax peeling off the frame that GMT900 trucks didn't have. Look under any GMT900 truck in the Midwest or Northeast and it'll be pretty obvious.

 

Im starting to think the same. I did two test spots in my wheel well. My rusting is still very minor so not ready to strip and paint. The two spots I sprayed conservatively have darkened in color from the oil(so harder to see which is a nice plus), and so far not flaked anymore from that area. The wax just at the edge is only slightly softer than the dry parts of the wax. So far so good, but Ill keep my eye on them.

You pressure washed the frame? Yeah bad idea. With or without the FF, the wax is going to get blasted off.

 

To anyone that uses FF over the factory wax, you don't need to pressure wash the frame off with it applied. I rinse the frame once a winter on average using a low pressure spray nozzle.

Some 'undercarriage' items are not coated, some are painted (or e coated) some are waxed.

Well I picked up my truck today from the dealer after the TSB fix. Looks like they did a good job stripping and cleaning the frame. They applied the appropriate inhibitors and then the finishing coating. They also under coated the whole works after they were done on their dime. Very clean and no overspray whatsoever. We'll see how long it lasts.

Those "circles" on the frame by the rear wheels are starting to rust on my 2015 with a build date of 8/2015. Truck is one month old with 1200 miles. It isn't very bad yet but when does it get bad enough to take it in?

I had a product called "Armaguard" done on my frame and I fluid filmed the rest. Basically a rubberized bed liner type coating but slightly softer.

So my dealer has never done this job before. Should I take it to one that has? My dealer is saying that the bed will have to come off to reapply this and they wont give me a demo either. This sucks because I even work at the dealership. They keep acting like they do not have any time for me. I guess I will end up taking it to our main competitor, because they will give me a truck to drive while mine is in there.

I would say I agree with you about the loaner but I really wouldn't complain about taking the bed off. To me, I think it is the only way the job can be done correctly but maybe that's just me. :)

Yeah I see that but it just scares me because they have never done the job. I feel more comfortable taking it to Everette

What can we use to repair this? What are they using at the factory?

    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31. Without a doubt at these pressures I am speculating at minimum wise for your truck, it would most certainly ride very different then it did when you were using 55 lb front and rear.     https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf
    • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well.
