Anyone done an install of a Ham on one of these that has the center console without seriously cutting into it?

I have a Yaesu FT 8800. I mounted the base under the back seat of my crewcab, and ran the wires for the remote faceplate under my weathertech floormats.

 

I fashioned a friction mount that sits in the center console, so far so good. I have a coworker that is 3D printing a mount for me to get rid of the wood.

Looks good, let me know how the friction mount goes as that is pretty darned close to exactly what I want to do. I plan on making a small wood bracket/box to go under the rear seat and then run the necessary cables the front.

 

I need to get a 3D printer hehe.

 

I am thinking of getting a Yaesu FTM-400DR. Which has a slightly taller head on it. So, I am wondering if it may be too tall.

 

How and where did you mount your antenna(s)? I have a tonneau cover on my truck (G4 elite). I have been looking over the offerings at www.breedlovemounts.com and think that the front rail mounts they have may work. Although I am looking for something much thinner on the top bracket to affect my seal less. three across the back should do it so I can mount my HAM and CB antennas.

Looks like a go box is what I'll have to use unless anyone else comes up with another solution

The friction mount turned out great. Still doing some prototyping with the 3d printer to get it just right.

 

I have a crew cab and I installed the radio under the rear passenger seat. I actually modified the bracket that holds the jack. And put the jack in my toolbox.

 

As for antennas, I tried an MFJ window mount antenna. Unfortunately I couldn't get the SWR down to an acceptable level. A couple ham guys thought it had to do with the factory tint on the rear window.

 

I installed a new dual band antenna and mounted right behind the cab.

I have weather tech floormats so running the cables from the rear seat to the center console was simple. I just ran it under the mats to the driver seat and wrapped the cables in one of those rubber conduits you see in offices when they run cables across a high traffic path.

 

I also mounted an external speaker under the dash so I can hear it better.
