First off thanks for all the info. I lurked here for several months before pulling the trigger trying to make sure I made the right choice.

Question is what do you guys think about a topper "shell" on this rig??

Not really a fan of toppers. For simple aesthetics I think they are ugly, and they say "i'm an old man grandpa rig" (no offense if you are an old man grandpa....)

But for usability and functionality they are great. If you plan on having environmentally sensitive stuff back there, the topper is great because it doesn't sacrifice the height of the bed like a tonneau cover would.

Basically it comes down to your personal needs/wants.

Welcome to the forum. enjoy the truck!

I had one on my 01 GMC, it was supposed to be a painted fiber glass bed cover. I split the cost with them I was leaving on a trip so I needed a cover. Looked good kinda like a Tahoe.

I'm not a fan of them but it's your truck, do what you like not what others perceive to be "cool".

Why do you care what we think? It's your truck and if you like the look or need the protection for stuff you carry it would make sense to get one. Guys who do a lot of hunting and fishing like them. Construction folks often find them a necessity to protect tools from the weather and such. Me I'm an old grandpa and think my truck looks cooler with out one, but I don't haul much, just an occasional kids bike, a bag of fertilizer, or some motorcycle parts.

like stated above if you need it for the kind of stuff that you are going to be putting back there then yeah do it. IMO honestly they are not aesthetically pleasing and if anything make the truck look weird. but it's your truck if you need it, get it and no one can say otherwise (not that they could anyways because it's not their truck its yours) but if you want it because it "looks cool" then I would vote against that.

I guess the question I should have asked is "pros and cons" of a topper. This is the first truck I've had for many years, been driving SUV's. I'm missing the extra room out of the weather that a SUV had.

The above reasoning is why some of us use foldable hard style tonneau covers - gives flexibility for when an open bed is needed, don't have to take it off to use full bed, but also provides "secure", out of the weather space for stuff as needed.

The more I think about the only reason I would get one is if there were a true need for it. LIke protecting and securing items on a regular basis. other than that Asethically I dont think they do anything for a truck. These days thay make locking tail gates that lock with tonneau covers, which no it wont keep the hardened criminal out but will keep the honest people honest, which really is what you need.

I got an A.R.E. Topper for my 2014. I take our dog along at times and gear much of the rest. With a little help I can get it off if needed for tall loads. The main reason for one is to keep dogs and gear out of the weather, and added security.

I had a topper (shell) on my 2008 Silverado and used it a lot for camping. It was great for two people. Setup and pickup was quick and easy - clean, dry and safe. It looks like an SUV with color match. Tall or high things were hard to put into it (unless you can lay them down on their side) as well as ATV's etc. unless you remove the top. Your on your knees to get things in and out. Visibility is sometimes hindered but if you have the backup camera this helps a lot. A little extra weight in the bed helps with the traction in the winter and it may also have an effective on gas mileage. It is better to sell the topper with the truck for best resale. I liked my topper but didn't need one for my 2014 Silverado.

do to your truck as others do to their trucks. if it makes you happy then do it. if its something you need for your truck to be a fully functional truck, then do it. ive done things to mine im sure others wouldnt like. that why we all have our own trucks. lol

    • So.  Get this.  On the Chevy regular cab, you can get the factory remote start at the dealer from the accessories catalog.  BUT.  GMC, you can't.   Now...get this...GMC 2 door, you CAN get the power seat.     Go.  Figure.   Anywho.  are you trying to order?  Or locate?  Ordering for 2 door 1/2 tons has been stopped as of April or May?  So you won't be able to order.  You'll have to shop on the ground units or in transit units.     Ordering was stopped because the new trucks are coming.
    • Thank you.  I really appreciate the well wishes.  I'm an engineer in the telecom industry, I know hardly anything about marketing.  Over the years I did some videos for nonprofits and web sites for small businesses and the seed was planted.  Agree with over-buying, I started shooting on an iPhone before I got my first DSLR and tripod.   I'm looking at trucks with potentially 150,000+ miles to keep the cost of entry low while focusing on the client experience and equipment.  Good wireless mics for interviews, the right lenses & lighting to look professional.  But I don't want to be late or break down, the stress of emptying a trailer & securing a rental truck right before a gig would negate any savings from buying a junker.  So anything that leaks water, has extensive rust, or generally unreliable I'd like to avoid.   Does GM/Chevy overbuild these trucks for upfitting?  I talked to a local upfitter, they sometimes tie lights & other 12V into existing circuits, which I always thought was bad.  Which is why I enjoyed the AUX upfit switches on previous trucks (odd they mostly come with off-road or work truck packages).
    • i guess it might be depending on the type of driving. my 2.7 has 120k miles, changed the plugs at 70k and it runs as good as new. i have not used any injector cleaner
    • GM's are stainless and have a fairly robust powder coating, although, still not worth $850 in my opinion. They will hold up a lot better than their cheaper steel aftermarket counterparts.   What I like about the GM step bars is dealers will often equip their dealer stock with them. Lots of margin. Which means a lot of people end up buying them because they're already on the truck, even if they don't like them. So it's pretty easy to find brand new takeoffs with hardware on Marketplace and Craigslist for about $250.   That's what I did for my crew cab. I wanted ZR2 rock rails for the look, but with the ability to bolt up GM's assist step package. From GM it's about a $2500 accessory all in. The old folks in my life can't get in the truck without steps. I found the whole package on marketplace for $180.
    • I am really glad I found this post and this site... We have a 2022 1500 refresh LTZ that has these problems: - forward collision avoidance warning light - lane keep assist unavailable - adaptive cruise control unavailable   The truck was bought as a new leftover in 2023, so it was still under the 3/36 B to B when it went in for these problems earlier this year. It has been at the dealer on and off now for about 110 days now. These are some of the things they have done that I can read on the service tickets. - replace/add ground straps (4) - check all battery cables and vlts - replace serial data gateway module - replace front view camera - numerous reprogramming - a few calibrations (apparently ending with 'learned') Last week when I had it back the truck had those 3 warnings every time we used it except for 3 times. On three separate occasions the truck started and ran perfectly with no (zero) warning messages or warning lights lit - everything worked perfectly. Over that same time period the truck did not work on every other 'key' cycle which I would estimate at 60+ cycles. On those estimated 57 cycles it had the same 3 problems each and every time.   It is back at the dealer now - can anyone help at all with what the true problem might be?  Or possibly what can be ruled out leaving a lower number of possibilities? Thank you very much for any help you may be able to supply....
