What engine do you guys think?

Hey guys i'm in search of ordering or finding my new truck. Most dealers in the state only have 5.3's on hand except for a few Denali's and High Country's.

My dream build if i were to order would consist of:

GMC Sierra 2014 1500 SLT Crew Cab standard 6.5' box

Onyx Black

Jet Black Leather Seats

20" Chrome wheels

Max Trailering Package

Preferred Package

6.2(my question)

Bose

Full feature heated bucket seats

Floor Console

Heated steering wheel

Sunroof

Camper mirrors

Rear sliding window

My question is gm rates the 5.3 with 355hp on 91 and 380hp on e85, with the 6.2 at 420hp on just 91. Up here in the midwest e85 is all over and i would be interested in running it but the 6.2 is not compatable. Do you guys know does the 6.2 just not have the equipment(o2 sensors and larger injectors) to be tuned for e85 (not an option aftermarket wise) or just not possible? Also for you that have owned them i am interested in the max tow with 3.73 gears, would a 5.3 be enough or should i just bite the bullet and order a 6.2? I am comming from a 05 duramax and am used to the power of a chipped diesel but dont tow enough to justify buying a new one. i think a 1500 max tow would do me just fine as usually i am only towing cars and trucks. since these trucks are required to run 91 all the time e85 seems like it would definately be cost effective as 91 seems to always be about $.50 or so higher (dont remember for sure i buy alot of diesel lol) so i could see getting the 5.3 for the flex fuel and they rate it at 380hp.

Sorry for being long let me know your guys' experience with a 5.3 and e85 and those who have drove 6.2's

Thanks!

I might just bite the bullet and buy a 6.2 but seeing the 5.3 has 380Hp on e85 and e85 being a bit cheaper than 91 octane it seems appealing to me being that i can probably find the truck i want on the lot since there aren't many 6.2's around.

Anybody have input on their 5.3's running e85 vs 6.2's on 91?

I would go with the 6.2.. People are getting decent MPGs out of them.. Maybe 1-3 less then a 5.3 depending on the location and driving habits.

You won't be disappointed with the 6.2

No its not.

Wow that blows. In that case, with 15% ethanol fuel on the horizon, I wouldn't buy any vehicle that is not flex fuel rated then.

Been running E85 in my 5.3 for a past few weeks. Definitely peps up the motor. lost about 2 mpg around town tho.

E85 is overblown anyways, the 6.2L thrives on premium so I wouldnt use flex fuel if it did have it. I never used it even with my old 5.3L tahoe.

If you need the 6.2 L for towing etc. you should get it. If you want to be the big dog on the block and you have the money, you should get it. If you don't need it and on a budget, there is nothing wrong with the 5.3L. It is a good motor. All it comes down to is if you have the money and can afford it - go for it.

The 6.2L DI fuel system can't keep up with e85... That's why it's not flexy.

But if you can I would go 6.2. I drove 1000 mile round trip to get mine. E

5.3 w/3.73 and e85 will make you smile.... Plus you get the benefit of 87 octane and better fuel economy than the 6.2. But I really wish I had held out for a 6.2 w/3.73...

Definitely go with the 6.2 if you plan to do any towing at all. You won't regret it.

If your already buying the package that has a 6.2 upgrade for 2k Id do it. If your buying the SLE or the double cab and can get E85 its only 40 HP difference . When I bought it was an 15k difference.

Before my D-max i had an 01 1500 with the 5.3 and 3.73's. it towed a pickup on a car trailer ok but it was not a hill champion and ive gotten so used to the turbo on my diesel, pullin the 5th wheel against the wind up hill it doesnt have to downshift, just kicks up boost. pulled a car trailer with 3 4wheelers and a polaris ranger with a cab behind my buddies 02 2500hd with a 6.0 gas with true duals no mufflers and it was always downshifting and burying the gas pedal up a small hill to maintain 65, when we hooked up my duramax i almost forgot it was back there doin 80 on hills.

I understand being on a budjet and im in no way loaded but damn if i decide to buy my first brand new pickup, im gunna hold out to find the one i want i dont think im gunna settle for a 5.3. I might end up like FULL LOCK and drive outa the state to get one lol.

dobdabomb i disagree, the e85 hasnt taken off because it needs a different engine to take full potential and these new DI engines i think make more from ethanol. e85 still has downfalls but ethanol can take high compression and heat that gas cant. lots of people blending e98 with gas or just running strait ethanol in racing and high horse engine in place of high octane racing gasoline at $8 a gallon. I myself am conteplating building a turbo 5.3 on e85 to be able to run higher boost. The DI engines can run up to 40:1 AFR and not burn up and they have so high of compression.

I think even though this is a jump over my old 01 1500, i think im going to go with a 6.2. gotta date with a dealer down south this weekend ill hafta see if they got a 6.2 with deep gears on hand but doubt it. It would also be nice to get that awsome denali cluster in something other than the denali
