Lights behind grill

Recommended Posts

I've read through this thread many times. I'm Really starting to consider installing a light bar behind the grille of my '14 Chevy. It's that time a year where it's dark and cold and I have to fire up machines in the morning at our river terminal. I have HIDs in my Anzo headlights and Morimoto XB LED fogs but it's not enough for how dark it is in the Ohio River valley in the mornings, and my high beams suck.

I do not want to drop the money on a Rigid even though I know they're he best and I usually buy the best. But I also don't want to go too cheap. I drive a lot in rough conditions here in PA and at work, and I hot pressure wash my truck. So I need something that's good enough quality that doesn't break the bank. I'd like to use the RC mounts...so are the RC bars good? Or anyone know of other brands that work with the RC mounts? Curved or straight? I'm def gonna go with a wireless switch at first.

Hit me with suggestions, I'm open to all!

Take a look at the totron brand ones. I have 3 of them, 1 30" on my truck, 1 20" on the rzr, and 1 12" on my atv. All have been great! Ive pressure washed them, been smacked with branches. They've held up awesome.

I just put a 30" RC x5 on my 2015 Sierra. It's the only light bar I have ever owned. But I was in shock with how solid the thing is. I have it mounted behind my grill and I personally don't think the brackets are needed. I couldn't find just the brackets for sale on the website. So I went down to my local menards and bought a piece of aluminum and mad my own mount. Works great!!

Do you have any pics you would like to share? I am curious about how it looks and where you mounted.

TIA

Here are some pics. For the price I wouldn't do it any other way. It took a couple of times setting the grill cover up to the truck. But that is effortless.

So anybody who has done this. Can you send me a picture of where you grabbed power for the light bar?? I had mine all hooked up and a wire ran to my high beam to signal the light bar to come on. And last night the damn thing was flickering on when I clearly had all switches in the off position. So I'm getting feedback power from somewhere. So I pulled over on the side of the interstate and initially thought it was getting feedback from the wire ran from the high beam to the switch. So I cut that wire and it continued to flicker. So I feel confident it is not the problem. I ended up pulling the inline fuse and that obviously cut all power. Any suggestions?

**EDIT** It was pointed out to me that this is a 32" bar not a 30" My mistake!

I recently installed this 30" Rigidhorse LED light bar and I am in LOVE with it. The amount of light this thing packs is truly astonishing. I picked it up on Amazon and when it arrived it seemed like a pretty high quality piece of equipment. The mounts that came with it worked perfectly. I did grab some longer stainless bolts from Lowe's to mount it but that is all. It fits perfectly behind the grill of my 2016 All Terrain. I also bought one of the wireless light controllers from Amazon for $20 so I wouldn't have to drill any holes in the firewall to bring a switch through into the cab. In all honesty the hardest part of this project was getting the front end apart without breaking anything, and really after figuring it out, even that isn't too difficult. This is by FAR the best $140 (TOTAL COST!) mod I have ever done.

Everything back in place, if you know what you are looking for I think this looks great. I haven't seen any signs of the truck running hotter. I drive both interstate and surface streets every day and it has been perfect for 3 weeks now.

One of my favorite shots of my truck. This thing just looks darn sexy.

Factory headlights and fog lights only in this pic. This is my driveway looking towards the street. The factory lights are really pretty good to be honest.

Exact same shot but with the added power of the Rigidhorse lightbar, there is no comparison! To be honest this picture doesn't even do the bar justice. It is just mind boggling how much light this thing throws. It is awesome.

What tire size and lift do you have??

Also you just used the nounts that came with the light right?? Just measured to make sure it was at the gap and drilled the holes?? I have the same truck and digg the look...

Would a 32"er fit??

Hey everyone just got a new 2017 Sierra All-Terrain, and the stock lights are decent but I am use to having a light bar given I had them on my 04 Silverado. Not so worried about where to mount the light but more interested in seeing how people hooked the them up inside the truck. Any pictures would be great to help with the modification

Switch was from Amazon.

Bought a 1" fiber washer that had a 3/4" hole in it from menard's. Fit the switch and plastic cover perfectly. Sanded down the thickness in it so it would sit flush, otherwise, the little flap wouldn't close all the way. Also, Had to sand off about 1/2 inch on the backside of the plastic outlet cover so I could get the nut on the switch. But was pretty straight forward. Bought another Silverado console plastic cover on eBay so I can return to stock with power outlet in a few minutes. Easy peasy.

Can you elaborate a little more on what you sanded to make everything fit? I'm poaching your idea and just ordered the switch from amazon and would like to make it look as stock as possible with the flap closed. Also, what "silverado console plastic cover" are you talking about? Thanks in advance!

Grille shutters = light bar no so far. I haven't actually measured how much room is in there but not much I understand.

not even close to enough

Sanded down the thickness of the fiber washer. It was too thick to fit flush in the 12v power outlet hole and prevented the little cover flap from folding back down nicely. Sanded off a few mm and it sits nice and flush now.

I was referring to the little plastic piece with the flap on it that sits in the console and hides the 12v power outlet from view.

    • Without knowing how bad your banging is, one suggestion is the intermediate steering shaft on the steering wheel. These used to be a problem on 800 and earlier series. The feeling/sound was sometimes described as "clunking" and was felt in the wheel. Also there is a plastic piece in the lower column that is referred to as a bearing. Not your traditional looking bearing though. Your ball joints, bushings and tie rods or steering rack (if equipped) are the main point of issues. You never mention total unit miles, only that you've put 60k on it.   You can search the site for help on the ISS description. Plenty of these have been replaced   https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=site%3Agm-trucks.com+intermediate+steering+shaft&ia=web
    • Yes I have is set with the 1mm disk (Minumim Tension), for spring spacing and I raised my truck in the rear 1.5". You can go 2mm  and I think 3mm if you need.Minimum. We are on our way to TN from GA.. My wife is driving and stated she cannot believe  and   stated she can not belive the difference.
    • Most 1 ton trucks come with the factory overload spring, which need to be removed for installation of RoadActive Suspension. Removing the overload allows proper fitment and ensures the system works as intended. The RAS® Mega-Duty kit will reduce squat and provide significant improvement vs the factory overload spring.
    • I wonder as well, why they would send me a text message with links to these suggested procedures totalling over $10,000 without even the slightest hint of how they arrived at these being necessary.
    • https://precisionlubrication.com/articles/oil-filter-efficiency/     For them it is a problem of $$$$ and compliance. To cover both they have to lie from the heart.    Government wants low waste oil numbers so the bar needs to be very low on contamination to met that requirement.  Consumer wants cheap maintenance (perceived cost). Again requiring a low bar.  OEM wants high margins at a cost effective warranty rate and lots of repeat customers. More low bar.  Filter manufacture wants the same thing the OEM wants. See the pattern?   Consumers are fickle and also want perfection requiring a HIGH bar. Inconsistent with all of the above. Consumers can be, when the put their minds to it, inquisitive, love winning arguments which requires some useful information to be available to support them. And this is where it gets sticky and the lies begin.    Information needs a solid well grounded point of reference if we are to compare in a useful way. There is a standard for this.  ISO 4548-12. This standard sets the particle size at a specific Beta ratio and darn few are faithful to its intent.    If they don't state the test method they change the particle size or the Beta ratio to hit a perceived favorable standard. They obscure the information in a way as to prevent direct comparisons leaving the consumer with one method. UOA's with an ISO 4406 test result. Pricey and not allot of labs willing to do the work. Lobby work happens everywhere, not just at the seat of government.
