Silverado vs. f150 vs. ecodiesel ram

A buddy of mine bought one of the new baby diesel Ram trucks (almost 60K) a couple of months ago to replace his 7 year old Toyota Tundra. Said it drives nice and gets better milage unloaded (but gripes about it being slow) but when he puts his trailer on it and tries to keep up with traffic it gets worse milage than the old Tundra. Funny thing is the last couple of times I saw him he was driving his car so he could keep the miles off of the Ram and he sure was looking hard at my GMC.

I have never been more impressed with an engine like I am with the new 6.2, and this is since my beloved Pontiac Ram Air III from '69, and the more recent 8.1L big block.

And the older 6.2 was pretty good, but nothing like the new one.

The new 6.2 is hands down, IMO, the best gas engine ever built (for a truck)

IF Dodge ever puts their 6.4 SRT8 motor in a truck, then I will have to reconsider.

You can get the 6.4 in a ram.

a client of mine was sharing a story with me recently. he said some dude in a f-150 eco boost kept egging him on to a street race with his 2014 5.3 sierra.

my client is about 60 years old and usually not up for such nonsense but the guy was persistent!

so finally he gave in and raced him..

they were pretty even until the ford made a loud noise and pulled off to the side of the road spewing smoke all over the road.

well there you have it.. like the says goes Found On Road Dead!

CLASSIC! i just wish i could have been there!

had it been me i would have turned around and made a point to stop and ask if he needed help getting that POS off the side of the road, and i would have been laughing my ass off at the same time.

 

speaking of Fords and testing or quality, this is one of my favorite videos!

 

 

interesting how "TOUGH" the fords are built, to be honest this is pretty real world and pretty laughable.

I test drove a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel yesterday. I have to be honest I would love for my 14' Sierra to get 28+ mpg but I just don't like the looks of the new Ram. Kinda fugly looking IMO!!! Oh yeah, the sticker was almost 50k... Yikes!!!

On another site someone seems to have gotten 28.9 mpg over the last 640 miles with the Ram ecodiesel. Color me green with envy! And that's without highway miles...

I found a few eco diesel in the 30-40k price range. They drop them into the Tradesman series and they offer those in crew/extended cab. Most dealers want you to try the Longhorn with diesel so they can up-sell you. You can even get the diesel in a standard cab, long bed Tradesman for high 20's. That would be an awesome work truck.

 

I ended up with the GMC because the ride and more options. Diesel is also really high in IL, so when I ran the numbers on fuel saving compared to cheap 87, it was pretty negligible. I'd love to see what tuners do with the small diesel though. I'm sure that thing could pump out 320hp/550-600lbft with a tune and some bolt ons.

Even if you don't end up saving that much $$ with the diesel, the fact that you have a much greater range is awesome. Especially if they would increase the fuel tank size a bit, 700-800 miles would be realisitic.

 

I would love to see GM take this road and offer it in the half tons with reasonable pricing.

Long range is great but a human going to need a break anyway, so after you use the rest room and get a drink gassing up is easy to do. So ill save the 4k or more and gas up more often.

I highly doubt it beat the Silverado but posibly the Ram..

 

The Ram ecodiesel makes awsume low end power but trust me the truck falls flat. I was disappointed when I test drove it if it wasn't for the 8 speed the engine would have been a total failure but the transmission saves it. So the truck is very usable all around. I found the 5.3 just made more solid power all they way through my acceleration and through the gears. The Ram would go,pause then go,pause then go as it went through the gears.

 

Ford had to go to a smaller block and lower the power in the 2.7 echoboost to try and gain back the best fuel econmy numbers,

 

I think the new 5.3 really threw them for a loop as the toughted it as a V6 with V8 power the GM imporved the 5.3.

 

GM could most likely top the new 2.7 ecoboost just by adding the 8 speed to the 5.3 I think they may even have planned holding the 8 spped back for while.

 

The old Ecoboost was a car engine stuck in a truck I think they more purposly built the new 2.7 for the trucks.

That guy is full of .... A Ram is not going hit that mark without hitting the highway. Have already seen posts over there where guys are saying what their city/mixed mpg is.

The 28.9 mpg is nice, but is not going to be the tank avg with city/mixed driving.

High strung Ford engines (especially the early years of a line) make me very nervous. Tritons blowing the spark plugs out, 302 intake gaskets, pretty much every diesel they have ever made is buggy and expensive to fix. GM being conservative on the new engines is a good thing. I talked to a couple of Ford mechanics and sales people and asked them which engine they would buy if it was their truck and every one said the 5.4 V-8 because they were all scared of the ecoboosts down the road. I read that a replacement crate motor install on the v-6 was running in the 12K range, not something that I want to get into. Ford has made some great long lasting engines (300 I-6, late model 302), but they are not the horsepower kings. Another thing with the turbo engines is the power and good mileage (what you would buy it for) fall off a lot faster than a regular engine. My old 5.3 got the same mileage and used just as much oil (a quarter of a quart between changes) at 130K miles as it did at 10K miles and I worked it hard (an 400 to 800 mile trips with a 9500 pound trailer in 110 degree heat) for most of its life. I have already seen several 3.5L ecoboosts trailing blue smoke on the highway, not for me.

 

The way Ford is going, I guess the next powertrain that they will bring out is a turbo 2 stroke 1 liter engine with permanently lubricated bearings that turns 15K rpm and puts out 500 HP and connect it to a 27 speed transmission because the power band will be something like a 100 rpm window. It will use regular gas with no oil injection to get around the emission laws. All will be well and good until it cooks off like a roadside bomb in Iraq. Rams (look like hell at 50K miles because nobody really gives a crap about them after they realize it is still just a Dodge) will slowly turn into Fiats because the Italians won't be able to leave them alone. Imagine German complexity with French reliability.

    • Did have to make 1 modification because of the WeatherTech rear mud flaps and that was needing 3 longer screws than what came with the install package. 😄
    • Picked up the liners yesterday. Installed passenger side WITHOUT any modifications. All mounting holes lined up perfectly. Rain is interfering today with drivers side. Very Happy! Will add pics when finished
    • As a matter of amusement I’ll leave this conversation with this. Do you beat the government average fuel estimate? Statistics are a guide to me. Not a rule. Someone once said I have to have the last word. If true and possible may be. I’ll blame that on working in a family business.
    • That is a fair point, and I agree that trying to log “everything in the truck” would be the wrong direction.   There are a lot of modules and a lot of traffic. If the product became a full-truck datalogger, the amount of data would get huge very quickly, and most owners would never use it.   I think the first useful version would need to be narrow: - powertrain-side event evidence - selected high-value parameters - communication / voltage / reset events - pre/post event window - short report first, raw log only as backup   One distinction I should make is between active OBD/PID polling and passive bus capture. If you are polling PIDs through OBD, then yes: the more parameters you request, the lower the effective sample rate becomes, and you are adding diagnostic traffic to a vehicle that is already busy running itself. With passive CAN capture, the recorder is not asking all the modules for data. It is listening to traffic that is already on the bus. So it does not consume vehicle bus bandwidth in the same way that a scan tool polling hundreds of PIDs would. But your point still applies in a different way.   Even if passive capture does not add bus traffic, the recorder still has limits: - processing rate - storage rate - timestamp accuracy - decoder workload - event filtering - report size - user attention span   So the answer cannot be “log everything and let the user figure it out.” The product would need to store enough raw evidence to be useful, but only decode, graph, and present the important parts around the event.   A practical report should probably show: - what triggered the capture - how much pre/post data was preserved - which selected parameters changed - how those values compared to baseline - whether the same pattern happened before - whether any voltage, reset, bus-off, lost-message, or communication fault occurred - selected graphs around the event - raw data only as supporting evidence   So I agree with you. More data is not automatically better. The real product is the reduction from raw data into a useful event report.
    • That makes sense, and I agree with most of that.   I think the product would need both: 1. a default powertrain template, so it is useful out of the box; 2. user-selected priority parameters, so the owner or shop can choose what they want to see first.   Different users are going to care about different things. One owner may care about oil pressure and voltage. Another may care about misfire trend, AFM/DFM behavior, or U-codes. A shop may want communication events and repeatability first. Your baseline point is probably the most important one. Raw data is not very useful unless the report can show what normal looked like for that vehicle under similar conditions.   The way I would think about it is: - start with a basic known-good baseline - learn normal behavior for that specific vehicle over time - allow the event to be overlaid against baseline - show whether the event was a one-time spike or a repeatable pattern - provide a simple severity level, but with clear limits on what that severity means   For example, early severity could be something like: - Info: event captured, no obvious abnormal pattern - Watch: value moved outside baseline, but not repeated - Warning: repeatable abnormal pattern under similar conditions - Critical: communication loss, voltage drop, bus-off, reset, or severe repeated event   I would not want the first version to say “replace this part.” That would be overclaiming unless there is repair-confirmed data behind it. It would be more honest to say “this pattern deserves inspection.”   On the OBD port question, I think OBD absolutely has a role. OBD is probably the right place for: - DTCs - freeze frame - VIN - calibration information - normal scan-tool parameters - Mode 6 / enhanced diagnostic data if available The reason I am still looking at an ECM-side recorder is that the failure may happen before anyone connects a scan tool. If the owner plugs in a scanner after the event, the pre-event evidence may already be gone unless the ECU happened to save it. So I do not see this as “OBD versus ECM-side.” I see it more like: - ECM-side recorder: always armed, rolling buffer, event evidence - OBD/DLC companion: DTCs, freeze frame, VIN, calibration, normal scan data - phone/cloud: status, notes, upload, report generation, notifications   I agree that phone connection and push notifications would be useful. I just would not want the phone or cloud connection to be required for capture. The recorder should save the event locally even if the phone is not connected. The phone should help with event marking, download, notes, upload, alerts, and report viewing.   For a default GM V8 event report, would this list make sense? - RPM - calculated load / MAP - throttle position - vehicle speed - gear / torque converter state if available - coolant temperature - oil pressure - oil temperature if available - battery voltage - commanded AFM/DFM state if available - actual AFM/DFM state if available - misfire counters / roughness by cylinder if available - fuel trims - relevant U-codes / communication events - bus-off / lost periodic message / module reset / voltage drop events Which of those would you remove, and what would you add?
