Timken 4wd hubs

Upgrade? Most of the aftermarket hubs are no better than stock. They're a wear item, nothing more.

Having changed a few hubs on GM trucks over the years, I'd say you have nothing to gain and only something to loose. The stock hubs will typically go 100,000-150,000 miles before they start to die. I think it's from grease depletion. No way to grease them.

 

Let us know if Timken hubs go further.

I'm a 2wd running 22x12 wheel, so looking to do the 4wd hub mod and see how it works out. Wasn't sure if anyone had done it with a 2014 yet, I should have clarified in the OP.

I'm unaware of this mod. Normally 4wd hubs require the cv shaft to be installed and the nut tight for them to stay together. Without the axle shaft they'll fail almost instantly.

I suppose you could make a stub shaft to hold it together. The right sized bolt and nut would do the same.

Theory is to dissemble the CV's, bolt the outer cv joint onto the 4wd hubs.... torgue a axle nut and your good to go. I guess it's been done a few times and seems to work well.

This is a legit mod. I've seen it done over on GMFS. They install a 4wd bearing then use a stub CV shaft to bolt thru the bearing to hold onto the knuckle. This is a stronger setup than a typical 2wd bearing because if a 2wd bearing completely fails...the wheel completely falls off the knuckle. If a 4wd bearing fails the cv shaft holes everything together. Its a popular mod for peopel lifting 2wd trucks and looked for added strength up front with bigger/heavier wheels tires.

if your front hub is going to fail it will give you plenty of warnings before it does. on my gmt-800 I replaced three hubs and they all made the same grinding / whine noise and when you lifted the front tires off the ground the wheel had play in it. also when you turn the wheel while moving the grinding noise will get worse. all these symptoms will progress the longer the issue goes without being taking care of.

Maybe when running stock sized tires and wheels. but with bigger heavier aftermarket wheels/tires, if the bearing is gonna fail it is gonna snap the bearing right off and the wheel will fall off the truck. The 2wd wheel bearings just cant handle the larger wheel/tire combos as well as a 4wd one.
