GMT900 Right front axle seal

Did a search and couldn't come up with much on passenger side (RH) axle seal leaks for 900's. I just noticed a drip on my garage floor and got a sick feeling when I looked under there. Only 57K (easy) miles on this thing and a leaky axle already!? It's like deja vu from my 2005 which had the same leak but covered under warranty. I know it was a big prob on the 800's but anybody run into this much yet on the 900's? How much trouble is it to get at the passenger side seal?

Nope. I have seen a youtube vid on the older trucks but it looks like the strut may have to come out which the older trucks didn't have. I should just buy a helms manual and go for it I guess. Man, I hate leaky vehicles and between the power steering rack, oil pan, oil cooler plate, etc, etc...this one has been the worst yet.

I can't say whether it's a common problem but I had the right side done on my '13 HD about a month after I got it.

Glad you got your's fixed. Figures that there would be a problem with mine less than a year out of powertrain warranty. Let the nickle and dimes start flowing! Maybe time to trade her in but i really like this truck.

Update on the axle leak. I got repair estimates from the nearby chevy dealer and the GMC/Buick dealer a bit further down the road where I bought the truck. $412 at chevy and $245 at GMC. I was surprised at the large price difference there! For that price, I'll let them do it rather than me rolling around on my back for hours.

So it's back from the GMC shop and not too painful on the wallet. I looks like all they had to do was take the lower strut mounting loose for enough clearance. Chiltons manual says to remove strut completely and undo the tie rod end for this job but apparently that not the case.

The part numbers they used are : axle seal 22761722 ($24.27) and gasket 15270970 ($16.04) in case anyone is interested.

That difference is huge , did they break down the estimate for you ,? I would like to see the labour difference etc etc ,

Can you provide that from both stores ?

Posted

Labor = 3.1 hours at chevy vs. 1.5 hours at GMC. Not sure why but...why ask why I guess. More talented drivetrain techs maybe?

That is a dam rip off and please PLEASE report that store to the regional/district service manager ......, they have to be stopped ,,

There is a flat rate in a book they use ,chilltons and michell are gonna be close but not double ,

Please do this to protect future customers

This chevy dealer sells alot of trucks in this area and the service dept is always swamped so I suppose they feel it's okay to charge a little more. I have only used their body shop in the past and they've always done a good job for a reasonable price. Maybe the service guy effed up and gave me the price that they would charge to GM for warranty work for this job. :dunno:
