Backup Camera Display Opinions Please

My 2015 LT has a 4.2" Mylink screen with no backup camera. I am planning to add a backup camera. The options that appear to be affordable are: add a tailgate camera that interfaces with an Onstar mirror, or add a tailgate camera that interfaces with the 4.2" Mylink screen.

My feeling is that the Onstar mirror with the backup camera display may be more easily used because your eyes naturally go to the rearview and sideview mirrors when backing up. I have an OEM backup camera on my car with a dash screen display and I find that I rarely look at the display. Looking at a dash screen for backing is counter-intuitive after decades of driving with the use of mirrors. People with less years behind the wheel may be able to adjust of using the dash screen. I don't know that I can make the adjustment.

Please share your thoughts or experience. I really need a backup camera with the new truck. I just can't decide which way to go.

If you're going to do all that you might as well switch the 4.2" screen with the 8" screen. I personally would do the tailgate handle so it's a factory setup. I'm not sure I would like a small screen in the rearview mirror, I would rather have the whole mirror in case I need it (even though I rarely use that mirror and focus on the side mirrors). I do look at the rearview camera when needed. I've gotten used to the screen in the dash.

I'm older, 54, and a classic car collector to boot, so old school is my school. I occasionally glance at my rear view monitor, but I don't think it as reliable as knowing what is back there and using my mirrors, like the old days. I'm glad I have it, I guess, but it's not a big deal to me.

I don't have any problem with the screen in the dash (4.2") Sometimes I don't even look at it, sometimes it's all I use, depending on the surroundings.

Absolutely need it, though. Maybe if I had never had it it would be fine, but there's no way I could go back.

I have the backup camera in the rear view mirror. Maybe bigger is better but I find having it in the rear view mirror is great because of a habit you always look there with two (camera /w/o camera) views. I have no complaints and it is just what I needed. What you should consider is getting a good quality camera with good night vision.

That's a $1500 backup camera you're talking about.

Plus your 4.2 screen exchange making it more than $1,500.

Hello,

Not to get off topic here but what's involved swapping out the stock 4.2 head unit with the larger 8" head unit?

Thanks in advance and again, I apologize for the off topic question..

When I was looking at that a couple of months ago, neither of those options was inexpensive, excepting option 1 with a cheap chinese mirror.

I went with option 3: An aftermarket HU, and a tailgate camera. (Rosen/Echomaster, but Rostra makes a similiar one.)

I had even considered the 8" screen upgrade. The factory one was too much. Rosen is supposedly releasing their own upgrade kit, but I could only find a hint about pricing: The Nissan version costs $1200 US.

I ending up installing the Rostra back up camera with an integration module that is a simple plug and play for the 4.2" screen. Works very well but installation instructions were very poor.

I put a Gentex rear view mirror with auto dimming and rear view camera in my 2011 Silverado and it worked great. It was a better resolution picture than my Mylink screen picture in my 2014 Silverado LTZ. It was similar to this one...
