Remote Start via Voice using Google Now

Hello guys!

I just had a major break through by using the home automation tutorials.

I can now use my android wear saying "Ok Google, <lock, unlock, start, stop> my truck" and it will do as it is told, the only caveat is that it takes about 60 seconds in total for the command to fully execute because of OnStar still running on 2G. I expect anyone with 2015 with LTE will get 15-20 seconds instead.

Here is a video of my mods (video just uploaded, might not work just yet)

What you need:

-Rooted phone

-Tasker (where all scripts happens that interacts with RemoteLink app)

-Xposed (to install several things to tap into Google Now commands)

-Google Now API (Get the latest here)

-AutoVoice (This has a plugin for Google Now API AND Tasker to chain them together)

-RemoteLink (Tasker will be "operating" this)

-Secure Settings (A plugin for Tasker to do certain tasks if Tasker features done work)

-Google Now

-Optional - Android Wear Watch

With the above, you can tell your watch to control your vehicle, I will make a video demo later and post it on here, if anyone is genuinely interested, I will write up a detailed instructions as I find the home automation ones are poorly written.

Cool, but it takes a little extra time because of the OnStar app, I've used the app to start it from my phone and it does take a little time. I don't plan on using it though, much quicker and easier to just use the remote. If the battery dies in the fob then the phone can be a good backup, but other than that I have 0 patients as is lol.

I rooted my old phone (Samsung galaxy S2) and now have an S5 and I'm on the fence about rooting this one.

The phone app is awesome for when I'm at work and about a 1/8 mile from my truck and getting ready to leave at 2 in the morning. I just start it up through the phone at about 1:50, and its nice and cozy when I get in.

this....use it all the time when I am out of fob range. leaving work on a cold night, waiting in line at the grocery store on a hot day...fob is really only useful at home, otherwise you are too close to give it enough time to heat/cool anyway. Just gotta add a wifi garage door opener too :)

ohm...remotelink app/onstar basic is free for 5 years.

Good point, I wasn't sure about the range but I guess as long as you have cell coverage then Onstar will also have coverage (OnStar seems to just have more coverage than and cell providers). So far I haven't had to crank it up from a distance that's out of range of the fob.

Yeah, I find this will be useful when I go shopping, start my truck when I am checking out (and checking out the cashier chick? Laugh with me... please?)

I am near edmonton, malls like West Edmonton Mall takes maybe 5 minutes to get to an exit LOL, good to start it for a few minutes remotely.

I will make a video soon....

Cool stuff. Onstar should be on your list, I wont pay for that.

OnStar on my list of stuff needed? It is called RemoteLink on the App store/Play Store. It comes with the 5 year thing included, no need to pay extra. My 6 month OnStar trial thing expires soon, if my RemoteLink stops working, I will be making a few nasty phone calls....

I just lost my Onstar 6 month trial and only the key fob features still work on the app.

The app is free, but it only works if you have the onstar service.

Yeah, after 6 month of vehicle purchase should still work, because it should have OnStar RemoteLink functions good for 5 years from the day you activate OnStar. After 6 month, you just lose stuff like tire pressure info etc and nav push.

Thanks for confirming, I have 17 days left! I might resubscribe when the LTE upgrade comes along

I can confirm range is not a factor. I remote started my truck (parked in Michigan) while in Saudi Arabia a couple years ago. :D

The phone isn't communicating to the truck, it talks to an OnStar server that sends the signal to the truck.

OnStar right now uses 2G network, and 2G frequencies shoots farther than newer technologies. It is easier to cover a larger area at a slower speed (This is what I had experienced anyway, as I transitioned from a 2G phone to 3G one and now LTE)

Another thing is that 2G coverage is wider because of the more mature infrastructure already in place, LTE is just growing.

Uploaded a video, might take a while for it to work. Enjoy!

That was my understanding, the fob features still work on the app after the 6 mo trial is up, that would be all you need to still use the remote start, still don't need to pay for it.

I thought the nav push still worked if your vehicle was nav equipped, can anyone confirm? To be clear, I'm not talking about the onstar nav but the vehicle nav. it's dumb to lose the dashboard, just basic vehicle info, not like they are giving you anything special there.
