Wheel Locks

Recommended Posts

My Dealer is charging about $50 dollars for wheel locks on my new 1500 (20 inch rims) . I suspect these are the "GM parts" wheel locks that every dealer supplies.

Are there any better deals out there for a better looking - or better quality lock. It $50 reasonable? . I dont mind paying more if the wheel lock is of better quality.

ANy stories out there of owners no installing wheel locks and having the wheels stolen

That's not a bad price. Gorillas cost close to the same, but you could save a few bucks ordering your own. As far as traditional wheel locks go, they do present a reasonable deterrent, but can be fairly easily defeated.

I put them on after my wheels were stolen. The dealer put them on when they replaced my wheels.

If you do get some, watch out for cracking. I've had two crack because of the tire places using impact guns on them. I need to start telling them to not use a gun on the locks but always forget.

Are they standard on the new trucks? I picked up a set of 2014 split spoke wheels and they came with wheel locks. I only have one "key", can I order just go to the dealer and order a second "key"?

My truck came with "GM" locks, but I think the dealer put them on all of their inventory due to theft on the lot. The "GM" or "OEM" locks are really McGard locks - I got a spare key from McGard. Dealer was supposed to put the card that shows the key number in with my paperwork, but they did not. So I emailed McGard and sent them a picture of the key and lock that I have and they sent me a second key.

There are threads on here where members' wheels were stolen. There is the Armor Lock for use with wheels that have a center cap (they are a sponsor on here) and as Luster points out, the Gorilla locks for open lug types. He provided the link. These have a spinning outer shell making it hard to remove. Gorilla also makes a shorter open end lock lug that matches the size of the lugs on capped wheels. These are the old style that can be seen here:

They are both 14MM X 1.50.

Hope this helps...

If you have center caps on your wheels, I would get Armor wheel locks. I'd like to see the crook who keeps trying at it after he runs into a set of these!

How much did they charge you? Dose it matter that I am the second owner?

My dealer did not charge me for them. I had a 2011 Silverado; same dealer, same locks, no charge.

I installed a set of the aftermarket McGard wheel locks. Part Number #24210 for the ones that fit the 20" wheels with the exposed wheel lugs.

I want to get some gorilla guard locks for my factory 20" rims. How do I figure out which locks will work with my rims?

I should look into getting some wheel lock myself, Id hate for mine to come up missing one day,,, that would surly suck big time

I added them as a $55 option when I ordered my truck. Was that a dumb idea?

I assume that since it won't be sitting on the lot and I custom ordered, the dealer doesn't need it as a selling point so I doubt I would have gotten them free.

Is it necessary for you to have locking lugs on your WHEELS?

Must be a bad area if you have to worry about your WHEELS being stolen right off your truck!

As a person who used to swipe wheels in high school, its thinking like that that will have you coming out of Walmart one day with your truck sitting on the rotors. That was back in the 90's and we could do a truck in 90 seconds. And that's without the fancy lithium ion power tools that they have today. I bet a team could do it in 30-45 seconds now. My buddy had his wheels snatched in his driveway WITH WHEEL LOCKS a few years ago and he lived in a gated community. Guess the UPS man gave out the code!!

Point is, it can happen anywhere. Cheap insurance just in case someone's looking at your ride. On STAR can't help you if they steal your shoes.
