Yes, that's true... even though I'm saying it's normal to hear noise when doing that, I'm not saying it's normal to do it 24/7

I've only driven my one week old Sierra in auto for about 50 miles over the course of 2 days.... In ice/snow conditions. The transfer case had the metal shavings that I referred to earlier .... Wouldn't consider that 24/7 driving and also don't think I've done anything to cause the damage.

The majority of parts in a car have metal shavings, including the engine. It is more a matter of size, where they're coming from, and if they're due to damage or not.

The dealership is considering it damage... And they agree that the sound/feeling in Auto is abmormal... They're waiting for a GM engineer to check out the truck before they decide what to do next

I have no noise with my 4 auto mechanically speaking. (I do have the high pitched electrical squeal discussed in another thread that has to do with the 4 wheel drive knob/circuitry). I have not used 4hi or 4 lo yet. I do remember on my 2007, 4auto was silent but 4hi had a sound as if something new was engaged mechanically (the front drive shaft obviously) but it wasn't a bad noise like a grinding or anything like that, just the noise of something else working. I expect to hear something similar in my 2014 when I use 4hi but so far, 4auto is silent....like I'm driving in 2hi.

tried to find the thread regarding the electrical noise when in 4WD, in fact I believe I posted in it at one point, any resolution regarding that noise?? My dealer says they can't hear it..surrreee.

 

To the OP - I have used the 4WD on my 2014 a BOAT LOAD - 2 heavy duty new england winters and trekking to ski country on a regular basis, the WORST winter by snowfall was this year as well in MA - I can say I have zero mechanical noise and barely any feel in Auto, but do have audible mechanical noises in HI or LO - nothing that seems like damage or abnormal though

Nope that's how it's supposed to operate apparently. No one here on the forum has it resolved yet as far as I can tell.

It's not my fault you keep saying stupid stuff.

 

I can prove that driving these things in Auto 24/7 is bad for them.

 

Please do "prove" one of these transfer cases can be ruined by using Auto for 200 miles on snow and ice. The fact you think you can shows you don't know what any of those words mean.

No where in this thread did I reply to a post and said do not use Auto 4WD for snow or ice. I replied to the OP and the post on page 1 that said they had audible noise while in Auto. If you drive in Auto 4WD often or for long periods on pavement you WILL wear out your front transfer case.

 

The funny thing is you even quoted me saying driving in Auto 24/7 is bad, and then you replied 200 miles. I never said 200 miles would break it. I said all the time.

What I hear, is a high pitched electrical sound (the same sound I hear when I switch from 2WD to Auto or 4WD). the link sounds like GM acknowledges it, but just says dont replace it, not a repair for the time being.

If it's a problem, then my 2000 and 2006, both of which made the exact same noise, had it, and never had an actual "repair". Never even replaced the transfer case fluid in either.

Someone on Techlink said to just dynamat the whole TCCM, probably would work, the sound is pretty damn annoying when its there... it just isn't very consistent unfortunately.

I've also noticed the mechanical noise on my 2014 when in auto 4wd and 4wd hi. The noise is always present when either are selected. It's not a grinding noise or anything and it doesn't vibrate or feel abnormal just a noise that my 2005 with the auto 4wd system (and over 100k miles) never made a noise like this. I've never noticed a high pitched electrical noise in the 2014. I figured I'd ask the dealer at my first oil change to check it out though.

I recently purchased a 2015 GMC Sierra SLT. I had a 4 inch pro-comp lift and 33's Toyo M/t's installed by a gm authorized shop before I picked up the truck from there dealer. Within 200 miles I noticed the same symptoms described here... When in auto mode ( the roads had snow and ice on them) I noiced a growling and a weird feel... Like driving on rumble strips. When I took the truck into the dealership they said when they opened up the transfer case there were metal shavings in there... They said the chain had a lot of play in it so they replaced the chain and bearings ... Put it back together and it's doing the same thing. Now they're starting to lean towards the " it might be the lift causing it" card. Can anybody here confirm if they're having the same symptoms on a stock truck ( no lift)? I would love to call BS on the dealership. The truck is still at the dealership and I just want them to install a new transfer case... Truck has been in the shop longer than its been in my garage. Not happy

    • I have never seen GM instructions for the other trucks as per the HD with the 6 speed or the half tons but had got the impression that the HD trucks with the 6 speed were not having the same problem that the 10 speed and pan presented. Also video that I have seen of the HD 10 speed with the gas engine starting in 2024 model year showed that it was a real struggle to even make it work when pulling down hard on the exhaust after undoing the exhaust hanger bracket on the side of the transmission as after all there is little room for the pipe to even go down behind the Y joint as it soon would hit a frame cross member. Also that they had tried just like I did with the gasket off and no way was that pan coming out any way they tried to manipulate the pan. From that as well as the local transmission shop talking about the pain in the rear issue, I was not expecting my pan to come out because GM shows it was not even intended to come out without dealing with the exhaust piping.    It would be nice to claim, here's what you do and its easy to remove the pan guaranteed on any HD truck with the gas 10 speed but dollars to donuts the next guy trying what I did would not have the same luck as the exhaust was just manufactured slightly different and be pissed off at my claim that the pan comes out with no issue. Its more of a try and see if your particular truck might work like mine did .... or not !. 
    • Sorry I didn't see this until now, but it works on both the 6 speed and 10 speeds, as well as all the half tons too.
    • Hello, I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 that I recently changed both motor mounts on due to the driver's side being blown out. After replacement I seem to have a steady vibration that I can feel in the pedals and the back of the seat. At this point I'm convinced that the aftermarket "Anchor" branded mounts I used are not performing as well as OE, the only real reason I ended up using the mounts in question was because my local dealers were out a few months to get a Driver's side mount. I've tried "Neutralizing" the mounts according to the motor mount TSB published for these truck to no avail. My trans mount is also in great shape and seems to be absorbing vibrations swimmingly. As far as I can tell there is no issues idling, my idle RPM is steady and I've recently put GM plugs and wires on, however, I have not cleaned the throttle body or intake valves. Any one else have a similar experience with aftermarket mounts? Patience certainly is a virtue that I wish I exercised here. Thank you!
    • I still saw people out for runs, on their bikes/motorcylces, jeeps with the doors off driving around here the past 2 days. I guess we are just used to it here haha.   Tasted like a bonfire the last 2 days.
    • The TCM has to be flashed before it can drive.   If you installed it the way it is, it has the OS (operating system/program) from the 2010 truck you got it from. That will not match with the VIN/OS pair that your 2013 truck has.   You can do the full install. Then tow it to a dealership and they can flash the trucks PCM/TCM with the latest program for your VIN.
