I spoke to comp cams. Here's what I bought for my `14 5.3

 

Comp cam 624-512-13 hydraulic roller cam

Phase limiter 5456

Spring kit 26925ts -kit

 

The cam and phase limiter will cost 502.18 thru compcam

 

The springs run about 436.39

 

You will need a tune. Hardened rods recommended. Rockers can remain stock. Lifters are recommended to be swapped too. Hope this helps

I cammed my truck. Comp cam recommended 624-512-13 cam 5456 phase limiter

I'm waiting for it to show up. I have a couple more mods to do in conjunction. Need to gather all the parts.

I bought a SS Camaro instead. Goes fast, more fun to drive than the truck.

Anyone wanting to do this themselves, I used a few tricks, not mentioned anywhere that I've looked.

 

Started by buying a 1 month subscription to Chilton online. Some good info, but cam swap begins with removing the engine....lol

You did the LT4 cam right? i'm over on performance trucks site.

yes...lt4 cam, valve springs and injectors...similar to kb

why would you have to remove the engine to swap the camshaft? Is there not enough room after taking the radiator out?

no, don't remove the engine, just the radiator and in my case , move the ac condenser out of the way

 

invest $16 for 1 month of Chilton online, but ignore the first step 'remove engine' lol

 

other notes: the oil pan does not have to be lowered, the oil pump stays put. alternator, ac compressor, water pump and front timing cover, including 2 bolts to the oil pan must be removed. The harmonic balancer is a tough one, it took a 700 ft. lbs impact gun to remove the bolt ( tty not reusable and a standard 3 jaw puller with short jaws to remove the balancer (it is keyed)

 

when timing cover is off, rotate crank until cam timing mark is lined up either straight up or down and place a witness mark on something non moveable. This is needed in that the crank sprocket timing mark is hidden behind the oil pump. cam is held in by 1 bolt, very tight . It is part of what they call the cmp actuator and is not reusable (tty)

 

rockers and pushrods removed, cam is spun to lift the lifters, 5/16" dowels to insure that they don't drop , timing chain tensioner has to have tension released, remove the phaser/cam sprocket and cam retaining plate and out pops the cam.

 

without moving the crank, line up cam with the pin at 3 o'clock , phaser/cam gear with the arrow pointing to witness mark and assemble with new actuator bolt (tty)

 

it's like any other ls cam change with a few twists.

By the way, don't forget to do a C.A.S.E. learn with the PCM after doing a cam swap. It sync's up the camshaft timing to the cam sensor for more accurate spark and fuel injector firing. I did this with every cam swap I did in the 99-07 trucks. :)

    • I agree. That`s a LOT of sludge for 12,000 miles. I tossed that out here since this is an OCI thread. There`s tons of people here that do not post.   I used to work on a city fleet. That includes police cars and fire trucks. Lesson is, not to only use the odo for oci. A police car has a ton of hours on the engine for the miles it shows. And, not just idling, directing traffic. They beat on these things.   Course, since it is a Kia, they were gonna use the "100,000 mile warranty" for their OCI.😉
    • CLASS ACTION SUITS?  Does anyone know if there is already a class action suit for the paint - which was to have been fixed, changed in after the 2020 GM vehicles?  Does it look like this?    Just started 3 weeks ago - No help from GM as of yet - Dealer will not assist in speaking with GM on my behalf. Confirmed it is the paint they use along with the way the put it on that causes it to fail.  Clearly a Manufacturer's Defect. 
    • That dog don't hunt. 😏   First, a 2025 with 12K on the clock AND idled for a year nonstop is false on it's face; this is 2026. You can do one or the other but not both.    Second, ENGINE HOURS are absolutely available. The rest is third grade math. Micky Mouse scanner he got out of a box of Cracker Jacks OR an ID10T error.    Third, if they ran it out of oil "Several times" that motor is boned on the first hit.    Does this guy think piling higher makes it stink less? 
    • That's interesting, I assume that would add to the cost of the oil but also I was forgetting to bring up the issue of the low tension rings allowing more oil past which in turn forces the cats to have more oil additives pass through them that wouldn't otherwise so they are creating that problem and of course its all in the name of fuel economy. Mind you the other issue would be the lack of additives that fight the formation of carbon within the piston ring grooves which turn the engine into an oil burner and with in this GM forums case is your average off the shelf Dexos licensed oil, meanwhile the other off the shelf oil being Valvoline's R&P isn't licensed and the only one that is which is that certain Mobil oil that came out recently ( its not even being marketed in Canada ) and only a fraction of vehicle owners are going to be using it out of all the other oils on the shelf or the quickie lube bay that meet the Dexos spec by way of actual licensing.    Also I suspect that its an easy excuse to pool the non turbo DI engines in with the turbo DI engines and design the oil to not have LSPI issues in the most demanding engines and short change the naturally aspirated DI by not offering a higher concentration of additive package they could handle and still not be at risk of LSPI.    I wonder if Amsoil flipped the switch just lately and did whatever packaging designation at the same time as I wonder what oil formulation I would have bought in May, of course I don't know when it was packaged at the factory vs how long it was in storage at the Edmonton warehouse. I know its been said at least in the past that the big players switch over to a reformulated oil but the packaging has not changed until they make that move as well so there is that cross over time where its a new formulation in a predated formula marked package.
