Tips for increasing throttle response

Recommended Posts

Looking for any tips/suggestions on improving the throttle response on the 5.3 on my '15 Silverado. Overall, I am quite happy with the engine as it is returning better than expected MPG (I live in South Florida so real world driving conditions consist of lots of straight, flat roads that are MPG friendly). My only issue is that I feel like I have to mash the throttle pretty hard when at a standstill to get decent acceleration. I should preface this by saying I am coming from a Dodge Durango with a Hemi that had a very quick throttle tip in/response but I would still like just a bit more responsiveness. Anyone with an intake mod or throttle body spacer that has found an improvement in throttle response??

Blackbear tune.

Throttle body spacers and air intakes are just sound enhancers and wont help performance.

Diablo In-Tune. Minimizes the transmission hunting, removes the torque management, and it rides great now.

I'm using the just the canned tune, but I've read GREAT things about custom tunes.

I've been messing with my tune for 14 months( hypertech ) the biggest change I experienced is tuning the transmission. Torque management and removing the V4 effects drivability on my truck. I do raise the RPM and shift points some I don't add the max engine tune, I run E 85 most which adds HP on its use. When I travel I like the option of different fuels.

Are there any threads in here that outline some of the parameters of the various tunes? I know we all use different criteria but it would help to see what others have done. This forum is great BTW - great, helpful members, much appreciated.

If you have a flex fuel Silverado, run E85.

Let your gas run down to an 1/8th of a tank on E10, then fill it with E85. Be sure to drive it city and highway at least 10 minutes before shutting it off again.

Voila. You now have about 10% more hp/torque, and your truck will feel noticeably quicker. (without warranty voiding aftermarket parts)

And you'll be supporting American farmers and industry.

Unfortunately I don't have a flex fuel engine - I used to run E85 in my Avalanche and loved the way it ran - I felt the engine ran smoother and there was indeed a little bump in performance.

If you have a 2015 5.3 you do have a flex fuel engine...

diablosport intune for 200-300 and a diablew custom tune from diablew.com and you have nothing else to worry about. really thats about the cheapest i've found for a tune+custom, the best is probably blackbear or something, if you'd like to go up to 600.

I didn't know that, Dusty. I thought you had to have the magical yellow gas cap as an indicator that the engine was E85 ready.

Not 100% sure but I believe not all 5.3s are e85 friendly. Might research and I think you do have to have the yellow cap like you mentioned Dana.

For 2015 GM made e85 an option on all 5.3's. In 2014 ALL 5.3's were flex fuel capable. I think the easiest way to tell is to check got gas cap. Yellow equals e85 ready.

This was the aboslute biggest pet peeve for me with the 5.3s when I test drove them. 6.2s weren't like this. If you touched the gas the throttle moved, but with a 5.3 you feel like you have to be nearly 30-40% into the throttle before the vehicle moves. At first this would almost get me into T-bone accidents and is a VERY DANGEROUS THING FOR GM TO DO.

When I let someone drive my truck I find they have the same problem.

Now that I've had mine about 6 months I hardly even notice it, but when I drive something else I about put it through the wall because of throttle response.

I would say a black bear tune would be a great start. I haven't done one yet though. I had one on my GMT-900 and it was a totally different truck.
