Water in Engine/Oil

So for those who don't know my truck took a dump on me last week. I was at a stoplight waiting for the light to turn green when it started to shake violently before turning off. I tried turning it back on but it wouldn't have it. I had her towed home for the day (it was a friday, so I had to wait til Monday for the dealer stuff). My buddy came over with his tool to check for codes to see if we could find out what it was but no codes popped up.

 

Monday I dropped her off at 11am, dealer didn't touch it til Wednesday morning (crappy dealer I know but that besides the point) they told me that water had been leaking into the engine and mixed with the oil. When I tried turning her on it sounded like the engine was tearing itself apart. To me it sounds shot, they said they needed to contact GM and they'd call me back later today (they didn't & i'm not surprised). Calling them tomorrow morning to see what's happening.

 

Has anyone been in this position? I feel like I might get a new engine but I don't really know. The dealer isn't the greatest, hell there idea of a loaner for someone who owns a loaded truck is a 97 single cab with no AC. Any input for when I call them tomorrow?

Wow...so sorry to hear that! Never been it that position, hope GM/dealer comes through and takes care of you! I would not be happy! Like I said hope all works out.

 

It seems very possible about getting a new engine.

Did they say how the water was getting in?

Well what are the possible ways? Bad head gasket? Any chance theres an engine oil cooler in the rad...or is that just atf cooler?

 

Crack in the block? There aren't many ways for h2o to get in anymore.

 

Old sbcs had water runnin the intake, oil coolers, etc.

I'm honestly not really sure, I didn't really bother asking the details because the rep on the phone was just being very quick and to the point. I figured if I have time I'll stop by the dealership tomorrow morning and get the full scoop. I'm just hoping everything goes over smoothly. Of all the GM trucks I've owned/driven none have ever given me issues so this caught me off guard. I'm pretty bummed to say the least but hoping it'll go well.

GM approved the warranty and the dealer ordered a new engine. Now I play the waiting game. I really need my truck and they don't have any loaners to accommodate me apparently.

Echavez, did you ever find out more about what happened to your engine? And did you get the swap done?

Well their official report to me was they "didn't really know" they thought it was water in the oil and engine but all they said was the manifold was completely torn and other parts were fried. The engine was completely torn apart. The new one should be in soon, hoping for early next week. Very anxious to get my truck back.

How many miles were on your truck? Just curious is all along with how often you had and who did your oil changes. For it to get this bad all at once sounds like something let loose all at the same time otherwise you would have noticed milky oil when it was changed.

For GM to be replacing the engine, it must not have been identifiable as a simple head gasket leak or even a cracked head. They would have to suspect a cracked block.

Are you thinking there's a link between oil servicing and this incident?

About 300 miles shy from 20k. The first oil change it received was from the dealer, the rest were from a shop I've taken trucks to for multiple years. I'd say I had it changed every 5k miles roughly.

it's good to know that they didn't give you a hard time about not getting the oil changed at the dealer itself. because otherwise there's not really any proof that you change the oil on a regular basis unless you kept all the receipts. but I would assume that no one even ask you about that.

They didn't ask me anything about the oil changes. They just took her in and one of the guys there had the audacity to tell me that all he knew was it sounded really bad when they tried to fire her up.
