Buick showed off its new Cascada's safety systems in a new press release this week. GM is long overdue in adding active rollover protection to its drop-tops, and this system is very welcome. However, what struck us as we checked out the images is that the Cascada is a fantastic looking car.

The two-plus-two front drive Cascada will be a cruiser. It comes with a 200hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and only a six speed automatic (no manual). If you want a sportier ragtop Chevy has the Camaro and Corvette in about a million different configurations. Many drivers want a convertible that does not have huge horsepower, carbon-ceramic brakes and a big price tag. They just want to feel the sun on their face and the wind in their hair.

The new Cascada fills a slot in the GM lineup that has gone missing way too long.

The yellow posts shown in the last image are the active rollover bars that pop up when needed.

It will have a huge price tag.

Those roll bars are hideous, other brands figured it over a decade ago. Why does it matter? They are triggered by sensors, and those sensors can be fooled or overreact to driving situations, like spirited driving or whoops hit that bump/incline a little fast and suspension travel went far enough on rebound to make the car think it wasn't on the ground. So then you have people driving to the dealer like that to have them put back in, rather than looking like the better roll hoop design that doesn't look out of place.
