Recommended Posts

Ok around Nov. of last year I started noticing the leather on my steering wheel was starting to get ridges in it. Since then it seems to be spreading along the back of the steering wheel. The leather in these areas is starting to chafe has anyone else had these issues

No, I don't have that issue and I am not an expert but I have some expierence with different leather types.

The damages (can) depend on the quality and color of the leather. Different stories here.

If you got good quality leather you can put off 'damages' more easily by using leather products regulary - can't stop it though. There are so many reasons why the leather on a seat or steering wheel etc. looks bad. From seat covers to wearing a belt, bad quality jeans, wedding ring, sweat and grease, you name it.

If you start early to take care you might be able to get on top of it. If you believe it's too bad I would talk to the dealer after talking to a saddle maker / upholsterer.

cheers!

Good afternoon strickland604,

I certainly understand how frustrating this can be for you, as I love my leather interior as well. GM offers leather conditioner to protect the finish of your truck's interior. You can find this through the dealerships. If you need further assistance, with locating the products to maintenance your vehicle. Feel free to private message us. Have a great weekend!

I think you are being told it is not under warranty for 36/36.

Mine was replaced for this and now the second steering wheel has the same problems. Let me dig up the link with photos....

The leather steering wheel in my 2015 Silverado 1500 Double Cab - LTZ - felt very dry to the touch when new. So dry it felt like it was sucking the oils out of my hands.

This is the best leather treatment I've ever found, and I've been using many different brands over the past 55 years..

Nuvite Chemicals:

Their Metal Polish is also worlds better than anything else as well.

FWIW - and ounce of prevention etc.

Really no clue why yours would do that, I am in Los Angeles with sunny 90 degress+ in the summer and have my leather steering wheel for 10 years+,works just fine for me. You may want to apply some leather conditioner to it every few months to keep them moisturized or something. I bought an expensive lotion ($50+) from 360tuners website and it's good, check them out.

Mine had an issue, but it was bumps in it instead of cracks. Developed on right side a couple months back and dealer replaced it with a new one. I was still in the 36k warranty period.

I doubt GM is very selective about what leather they use on these steering wheels. This is why some are better than others. I have not had any problems with the leather wrapped steering wheel on my truck or 2009 Impala.

It has to be approved by a GM rep. At least that's what they had to do with mine. Leather issues can't be approved by the dealer. They probably didn't even bother to ask. Take it to another dealer or call GM direct. Are you still in the warranty period?
