Oil Filter Tip

A "friend of mine" was running a P1 on his truck and I changed his oil from him today. I have been a huge bob is the oil guy forum member years ago, and always ran p1's in prevous vehicles. So naturally I recommended it to my buddy. I've cut open probably 2 dozen filters. I really wish GM would go to a BMW style cartridge filter... We cut open his oil filter and the dome end metal end cap on the media was un-glued. When we took the media section out of the can the cap stayed inside. The glue was black and smooth, and turning brittle. Never, have I seen a filter like that. Ever. In my life. Especially from my beloved P1. And what really adds insult to injury is the fact the P1 for our trucks are expensive. like $11 at AAP. I also noticed it's shorter by about 1/2" - 3/4" than the AC Delco PF63 we put back on. Lesson: No more purolator recomendations. I guess when they got sold, they sold their soul. They must be using a cheaper glue now. Who the hell knows. But for $11 you're in M1 territory. Plus the PF63 is $7 at Wal-mart. And it's physically built well. thick can, thick plate etc. So at this point, after what I saw on my buddies truck, I'm only running PF63 AC Delco's or M1 212's. the 212 is the same size as the PF63 FYI..... Ned out!

I have always run AC filters even on my race cars and the wife's Honda Pilot. They have always held under the most demanding setups and from my visual inspections they do the job very well.

I've always run what ever wally world sales the cheapest which is usually their house brand or ac/delco, the same with oil.

I have an AC PF63 on mine now. Might go M1 next time. I've never run a Mobil 1 filter after all these years. They feel like they're built like a tank. But at $13 a pop my truck will be seeing more blue AC's than anything else.

It seems that Purolator filters have had some issues with torn media in the past from all the post over at BITOG. Not sure what is up with that. The few that I have cut open had a small tear in the media. Even a few Mann filters had tears in them. All of the AC/Delco filters I have cut open have been great along with all the AMSOIL filters.

Someone over on BITOG posted pix of a new type Delco filter that had an internal issue.

I ran BMW or MANN filters (cartridges) in my BMW's. Never had an issue with either running 8-10k intervals. Champion Labs builds Royal purple's filters, Mobil 1 filters and AC's. I'm not paying $15+ IIRC price for a RP filter. So I'll be running AC's for $7 or M1's for $12 from Autozone. I guess I've been off of BITOG forum for years... things have changed. P1 was the holy grail 10yrs ago. And I remember running oversized P1's on my 4runner and with 5-6k the oil was super clean. Something has changed at Purolator from what I saw yesterday.

NAPA Gold/Wixs, Mobil 1s, or K&Ns. There's a lot of research done on filters in race circles and the three mentioned always come out on top.

If a guy kept the truck for 7 years and changed oil three times a year, he'd buy 21 filters. The difference in cost from an economy filter and premium filter is about $7. That comes to $147 difference over the 7 year ownership period. These trucks run from $30-50k. Given some of the information on economy filters posted over on BITOG, the economics just don't seem reasonable vs the risk.

That blue Car quest filter looks nice. But I don't have any CQ's around me. Again, I think I'll be running AC Delco PF63's or Mobil 1 M1-212's. Both Champ labs.

Rob- Apparently. I left BITOG back in 2008 or so. Been a while... P1's were the bees knees. Things change I guess. Yes, it's evident they have some "issues" going on right now. I'd chalk those up to their sale to Bosch and maybe "cost savings" as usual. M1 or AC for me moving forward after what I saw.
