Been using Wix for a long time now. Seems like the last one I bought was $10+ at O'Reilly. Getting pricey in my opinion. The dealer offers lifetime warranty if I let them do the oil changes. Supposedly that's $30 per oil change. I have always done my own work and am not ready to let them do my oil changes. I know it's done correctly when I do it, but that is their argument also.

Ordered non-E PF63 from both amazon and rockauto. In both cases I received PF63E filters. Amazons went back on their dime and rockauto refunded me but said I don't need to return the 2 filters. I guess I'm going to be using the E filters.

If properly manufactured, how much difference is the paper-glue-cardboard pleat end on the PF63E from the paper-glue-metal end on the PF63? I would think the glue may be an issue but the filter element paper is probably the weakest part of the filter. Of course that assumes the filters are properly made.

Any info on the reported oil filter failures on the 14/15 trucks? I wonder if these failures led to the PF63E design changes.

I cut open a used PF63E last week and didn't like what I found. The end piece wasn't bonded completely. The filter only had 5k miles on it.

Never seen a PF63 or PF63E failure here at the dealer.

The end pieces are not bonded anymore.

They're not bonded with adhesive but they're supposed to be "thermally bonded". Half of the end piece was, the other half wasn't. You could see where the bond was defective and came apart.

This is link illustrates exactly why the E-cores shouldn't be on your truck:

I have only cut 2 of the e cores open, both were loose like that. When I inquired I was told it was an assembled fit, no bonding.

I found wix to be the same way.

BTW- Great job on this, I appreciate your efforts.

Reminds me of the early 80's when Fram filters went down hill, those filters made a lot of mechanics rich.

I find it amusing when people say I hate Fram and yet have no clue who makes many of the popular brands out there including M1 and AC Delco. Hint, it starts with an F.

^ Champ labs makes AC and M1 filters. Wix makes their own and it's also sold under the napa gold name. Car quest's are also champ labs. Ford oil filters are also made by champ labs. I actually have run a lot of Ford filters b/c they are a very well built filter for dirt cheap prices at walmart. I ran them on Toyotas for years. Purolator makes their own, and now they are in or owned by Bosch so those are the same deal as wix/napa gold. Fram is owned or made by Honeywell. BMW filters are made by MANN. Where is the F?

I have about 25% remaining on the oil life meter. I have a M1 with Castrol 0w-20 Dexos 1 full syn in it. And my Gold plug magnetic drain plug. I will run it down to the usual 5% +/- and change it. I picked up the last two AC Delco non E core PF63's at my local WM few months ago. Plan on running one of them and some 0w-20 Dexos 1 full syn Pennzoil Platinum this next go around. Once the non e core AC's are used up I plan to go back to the M1 as long as what I see in this one coming off looks good.

Honeywell owns Fram now and makes their filters. At least in canada. They made delcos too. That was 10 years ago so.......maybe Honeywell sold Fram again

Honeywell sold Fram to the private investment company Rank Group Ltd (http://www.rankgroup.co.nz/) which also owns Champion Labs. Fram and Champ Labs are all under Fram Filtration (http://fram-filtration.com/)

I have been using a Fram Ultra XG10575 on my Sierra for last 4-5 oil changes. I have been very pleased with the construction of this filter. I don't think you can find a better built and better filtrating filter for the price (about $9).

Fram Ultra is what I plan on using after my 3 years of free dealer maintenance are up (my dealer throws in an extra year).
