Paint problems on 2014 Silverado!!! Anyone know what this

Recommended Posts

I recently noticed spots on the bed of my truck. These spots were not there when I purchased the vehicle and are now showing up. Anyone know what these are and or what is causing them? My truck is Tungsten Metallic, however, its a few shades lighter than other trucks I see on the road and on dealer lots. When I purchased my cap for the truck, ARE had to repaint it to custom match my truck color because of my truck being lighter. I am hoping there is not a problem with my paint on a truck that is a year old...

I'd go back to the dealer and have that fixed, it looks like it wasn't properly prepped and the paint is bubbling now.

Yup, looks like rust bubbles but its too early for that, so there was likely some kind of air pocket that has expanded in the heat.

That is caused by contaminants in the paint. The paint facility at the Mexico plant is TERRIBLE!

The Tungsten trucks seem to have more issues than most. Must be the paint formulation. There are numerous threads on here about bad tungsten paint problems. One guy even had his rocker panels WASH OFF at the car wash.

My Dad has a '14 CC, and I have a '15 CC. Both Sonoma Red metallic. His paint is definitely thinner than mine. I can tell his has way more rock chips.

However, mine came from the factory with a HUGE paint blemish on the roof. I didn't notice it until I had the truck for a couple of months. The guy that details my cars pointed it out. It was a piece of black plastic shaving, about the size of a fingernail, It was painted into the roof, near the right side C channel.

I took it to the dealer. They tried to pick it out and do a spot repair, but it took a huge piece of paint with it. It went through to the base metal. They ended up sanding and painting the ENTIRE roof. They did a great job, matched the paint perfectly. I feel better about the paint on the roof than anywhere else on the truck. Plus the dealer gives a lifetime warranty on their paint work. Bonus!

Bottom line is, it will only get worse. Research the dealer body shops in your area and take it to the highest rated one. that's what I did. It will be covered under warranty.

Insist on getting a loaner while it's gone. It could take a week or more to fix. Mine took about that.

Good luck with the repair!

Iridium metallic here, GMCs equivalent to tungsten.

I haven't noticed any bubbles yet.

I actually noticed just last night a number of very small paint chips around by gas cap as well as on the other side in the same area, front area of the rear quarter panel, plus a few on my tailgate.

Recently was towing an enclosed trailer on about 60km of gravel, I am speculating the rocks were ricocheting off my trailer for the tailgate ones (as my trailer also shows some battle damage-will be looking at trailer hitch rock mudflaps for sure).

The ones on the rear quarter panels must be from my front tires (and the draft from the front of the trucking forcing any rocks to hit that area), I will double check to see if my weathertech mudflaps are sticking out of the fender far enough to cover the tires when I get from work, if not I might be clueless as to the case.

I was surprised but also not surprised. The paint does seem quite easy to chip. I'll be driving a lot slower on gravel now.

I have a 14 blue granite CC and found 2 bugs in mine. 1 on the roof and one on the gate.. My wife's 14 Impala has a mosquito on the lower part of the rear door too. What can u do? Have it painted? I'll live w the bugs and not have my truck torn apart

I have an Iridium metallic truck and the paint does seem to chip fairly easy, I just touch it up when I notice one. I have noticed a couple tiny rust spots in the corner behind my rear bumper though. I'll have them look at it next oil change.

It may seem like the Mexico plant has issues, but the American plant is the plant that actually had a recall on trucks for paint flaking off. Do a search through the paint threads and lots of the trucks with paint issues are Double cabs, which were built in the USA, not Mexico.

looks like water was trapped under the paint and is beginning to cause rust. This can happen when a paint gun or in this case robot gets water in the paint gun. It does happen although I havent seen it on a new vehicle only on repainted vehicles.

Did you just get touchup paint from the dealer or auto part store?

Found two "fish eye" spots on my hood after I bought it, didn't find them before I signed the papers. I love black vehicles but they are a pain to keep looking good. Good luck with your paint issues.

They look like brake fluid drops on paint.

I have 3 spots of dust contamination on my 2014 that I didn't noticed until I clay bared the paint. I thought about having them fixed but one is on the hood, one on the roof and one on the drivers side sail panel. I didn't want to take a chance and end up in a worse position than I have now.

Just from the dealer, I think it was like $9

Thanks guys for the responses. This truck actually came from the Flint plant in my home state of Michigan. I'm definitely going back to my dealer. Have an appointment next week. I love the truck, but this shouldn't happen on a $45,000 vehicle. My last two silverados did not have any paint issues. I also noticed something under the paint on the roof as well. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with GM and this paint on the truck....I expected a little more with these new trucks! I will keep you all updated once I go to the dealer! I appreciate all of the insight!
