Tapping noise in engine

this is a addition to my loss of power topic i posted the other day. i brought the truck ( 2015 2500 Hd 6.0) in to the dealer and theres no indication of any power loss. as far as the tapping noise they said its a normal sound because of the high press fuel pump feeding the injectors and the aluminum block. which i know it has a cast iron block. any body have any issue like this? the noise just started and i ve had the truck since april. ill keep an eye on it and if the tap gets louder its going back. sure sounds like a lifter to me. Also theres a TSB he attached to the repair order,so ill take a look at that. something about normal engine noise.

6.0 is LS based and it NOT direct injected like the LT based 5.3 and 6.2. L96 Vortec is multiport. Your dealer is dumb. The TSB will probably be for the 4.3/5.3/6.2 new engines with DI.

 

My 15 does it, the 11-14 HD trucks we get in do it, my 2006 did it, my 2012 5.3 did it. Not sure why they have some noise to them. Early LS engines were known for piston slap but has mostly been eliminated throughout their production run (graphite coated piston skirts).

 

6.0 do have a cold start tick that may be present:

You may have a vehicle with a concern of cold engine tick noise.

 

This concern will diminish within 50 seconds of a cold start.

 

The noise shuts off like you have flipped a switch.

 

This concern may be a vehicle design characteristic as the ECM calibration is designed to meet cold start emissions.

 

The noise that you hear is actually combustion taking place in the exhaust manifold. When the timer hits the 50 seconds it advances the timing and the noise is immediately gone.

yeah,i bet its for the alum block ones. this noise goes away quick when first started,but then after i get to work (half hour ride) i can hear the tapping at idle. i dont feel this should be there,but ill keep an eye on it. didnt start doing it till last week and ive had it since april. my 2012 did it starting up in the am and they replaced the oil pump. that one did it a little in the am after that but not as bad.

I did see your other thread on the power loss...I'd keep on it pursuing the dealer if the power loss still is there or comes back. Make sure they pay attention to the engine in your truck and don't go diagnosing it thinking its a Gen V Ecotec3 V8 (5.3, 6.2).

they didnt even mention that they addressed the power issue,he sounded more concerned about telling me about that bulletin that says engine noises are normal. that bulletin # 14-06-04-004B states 1500s tahoes,corvettes etc with the 4.8 5.3 6.2 engines. im going to call later and tell them that my Hd is not in that group. i also pm d one of the GM cust reps that are on here and they said they would look into it. ill try to scan and attach that bulletin here. thanks

ok,well the local dealer said they are going to change the bulletin to include Hd trucks. this noise is far from normal so i took it to the dealer i bought the truck from and they came out and immediately heard the noise and im bringing it in this week. i will post a you tube link here.

Definitely sounds like they are trying to diagnose the wrong engine.

 

And folks wonder why I have little use for dealerships after I buy something. Like watching a Keystone Cops movie.

yeah,well i took it in to where i bought it,dealer is near my work. they heard it right away and they have put in a new engine now and its great. im thinking i should call the other dealer and tell them what happened,but it prob wont matter. at least the selling dealer did the right thing.

My 09 2500HD's 6 liter was the same thing....GM dealers here and there all said it was "normal". A lifter fell apart and chewed a lobe off the cam at about 60000 miles and then they finally put an engine in it. At least you didn't have to drive with noises like that on a new truck for any amount of time.

I've been driving Chevy's all my life; first one was a 65 Impala 327. Had numerous since. Started driving pickups in 1975 and continue to this day. I have yet to own a Chevy that did not make tappet noise when started up, especially if small block. I have come to the conclusion that Chevy engineers have designed this in as some sort of perverse sense of humor. Same thing with rear main seal leakage, but another problem for another time. Anyway, rear main issue seems to have been "finally" fixed. Back to tappet noise; I had a 2007 6.0L 1500HD that made considerable tappet noise when starting up cold. Noise continued to get worse as time went along. Finally brought it to the attention of dealer during an oil change. Engine was checked out and found that some of the cam shaft lobs had gone soft and were wearing down. Truck was still under warranty so camshaft and lifters were replaced at no charge to me.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
