Outside air temp sensor for intake temp?

Has anyone tried to move the outside air temp sensor into their airbox so it would act as an intake air temp gauge? Anyone have any comments on the idea?

Never thought of the need to do that. You have an IAT sensor already installed. Use a scan gauge 2 to have a constant display.

It was more of an idea just to see what kind of temps would come in through the fender. I figured extending the wires was cheaper than a $150 tool. I do think a scan gauge might show up on my Christmas list this year.

Grab one of those cheap thermometers with a battery powered remote sensor. Stick it in your filter box (screw it in or double sided tape) and keep the thermometer with you in the truck. Should cost less than $30 with no risk of screwing anything up.

It will probably screw up normal hvac operation, esp on an auto climate vehicle. A trick I did on my TBSS was a plug and play wiring and connector kit to move the iat from the hot intake tube to the grill area. On my TBSS the ecm would pull timing if iat's reached above 85*.

The timing retard was one of the reasons I wanted to know the temp. I knew the computer could do it, I just don't know when it happens. Being an '06 without auto climate, I don't have to worry about the HVAC.

An issue may be is that the outside temp display is a calculation using the outside temp sensor and I can't remember what other factors. So the reading you get may not be accurate.
