Nerf bar replacement step pads

My 2015 GMC Crew Cab came with dealer installed 3" Aries Nerf bars. I liked the look but they do not provide the feeling of safety offered by the 6" OEM running boards that I had on my previous GMC. Other than replacing these bars do you know of a replacement pad that gives a considerable larger foot pad? I like the idea of the "Realstep" product but the cost is close to a new set of running boards.
