Fox 2.0 arrived today!

That is a misleading statement. The spring preload is simply a condition of the assembly when it is not installed. Once installed, the weight of the vehicle compresses the spring until equilibrium is reached between spring force and weight of the vehicle.

 

Preload is a condition that only exists because the shock absorber extended length is limited.

 

If you could take suspension geometry out of the equation, moving the spring perch up and down would simply move the vehicle up and down, with no change in ride quality.

 

The reality is that this type of " lift" creates a change in mechanical leverage acting on the spring as the angle of the A-arm gets further from the horizontal position. The effect is a exponential change in suspension stiffness as the change in angle continues.

 

You can use spacers or change the spring perch height (which changes uninstalled preload) and the effect will be the same.

 

The effect of preload on these coilover assemblies in our truck situation is widely misunderstood.

TeeDub and I have been exchanging PM's in regards to the Fox 2.0 Coilover shocks. I'm posting this with the hope that this helps anyone that may be considering the Fox Coilover shocks specifically part number 983-02-086 for GM steel control arms. We know the issues that TeeDub has been experiencing with his specific install and response he has received from Fox.

Here is my ride and the issues I experienced with my install. 2015 GMC Sierra Z71 Doulbe Cab with steel control arms. I attempted the install myself, but sadly failed. The stock rancho shocks came off without incident. The Fox 2.0 overall length was about 1/2-3/4 " longer than would allow to set on top of the lower control arm perch. This do it your selfer put everything back to stock. This am I had a local mechanic install the 2.0's on all four corners. From the look of his lot it appears he has experience in lifting 4x4 vehicles and is the go to guy in the area in which I reside. Here's what he had to do to accomplish the install in approximately 1 1/2hrs with a test drive. He allowed me in the shop with him during the install and explained why he did each step.

 

A 2 3/4" driver side and 2 7/8" on passenger for lift was achieved out of the box as sent from Fox. Upper ball joint, brake caliper, tie rod end and sway bar link was removed to complete the install. In my mind this install should be left up to the experienced mechanic with the proper tools. As a side note, the mechanic suggested the only safe way in his experience is to use an hydraulic spring compressor and not to try and adjust while on the truck. At least for this particular shock as the adjusting ring serves both as an adjustment ring and lock. Best adjustment ring setup would be an adjustment ring then another ring to lock both together. The same used for the more expensive Fox shocks. I'm happy with the level and the ride is improved over most roads that I had driven today. Cheers

So are the ones you bought the ones that are supposed to lift 3-4"? Even at 2.75 you may have to consider aftermarket UCA's.

The 3-4" lift is what one of the sales rep from Fox told me when I inquired about the proper shock selection for my truck. He stated some were reporting that 3-4" lift if it's preload is crank up. Yet the part number I referenced above when purchased through the online vendor the shock was listed as 0-2" on their website. Sad, but when you go on the Fox website and look up 983-02-086 part number it's not there on their search engine. So somewhere there's a huge breakdown in getting the proper info to the end user. The mechanic advised the angles seemed fine and the upper ball joint may or may not wear out in 40-70 thousand miles. I'm no engineer nor do I think I know everything, however, I would be willing to pay a few dollars extra for the 2.0's if they would improve the adjustment ring on the shocks to allow adjustment while on the truck without having to worry about stripping the threads.

Both say they fit a 2014-2016 Silverado but the lengths are different. When I was dealing with leveling kits the only difference in aluminum vs steel control arms are the length of the bolts needed because aluminum was thicker and require longer bolts. with these shocks there should be no reason for a different length shock between the two control arms.

Yeah, I noticed the bolts provided with my aluminum control arm kit didn't protrude all the way through the lower Fox strut mount. Wonder if they shipped the wrong ones. I went round and round with them over the length difference. I told them King and Bilstein sell the same part number for both. The only diff is if you're ordering UCA's since the aluminum trucks have a larger upper ball joint.

Also interesting they're an inch shorter compressed but three inches longer extended than the ones I got. They'd be very difficult to get installed if they're 3" longer.

I would like to see the difference in them when you get them back from fox. I wonder how much they crank them

Not sure what they're going to do. Crank these up or exchange them for the other part number. Seems Fox needs to do some research on these trucks and get it right. Sort of wishing I'd just sprung for the King setup, just didn't want to spend double the money.

TeeDub, based on the pics you sent to Fox of your aluminum control arms, have they determined if you have the control arms you referenced in post #22?

TeeDub, any update? I also just installed 985-02-018 and have the exact issue. Only lifted the truck a 1/2" then went back to stock height after a day of driving around. Went to 4 wheel parts and made an appointment to do the adjustment, after I had the same issue with renting a spring compressor. Now after reading this, think I need to contact Fox. My truck is a 2015 Silverado, CC, w/aluminum suspension.

    • I'm looking at carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and lumbar fusion. 
    • While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
    • Got this yesterday out of nowhere. Truck is a 25',6.6 gasser with 8k miles.  Only semi anomaly is that the truck had been sitting, uncranked for 6 days. Elec Stability Control showed immediately upon cranking, not while driving. No drivability issues, just the message. Battery didn't seem to be weak when cranking over.  I drove it, killed it, let it sit a few hrs with no avail.  Truck is 100% stock. No damage. 
    • This can be done.  It is not cheap and requires an instrument cluster swap with custom programming, new steering wheel with the controls on it, and a special jumper harness.   The cluster upgrade - 12.3” Digital Cluster Upgrade – 2022.5–2026 Silverado / Sierra (T1 Refresh Pickup) - WAMS   The wheel upgrade - Steering Wheel Upgrade Kit – 2022.5–2026 Silverado / Sierra (T1 Refresh Pickup) - WAMS   The column harness upgrade - 2019 - 2026 Silverado / Sierra: Steering Wheel LIN Bus Harness - Harness Dr. - DIY Done Right     The problem with doing all of this?  You pretty much can't have any programming done to your truck that involves the cluster ever again.  The dealer won't be able to program the cluster as GM's system will only pull data for the cluster the truck came with.  So it would be advised also to turn off over the air updates.   TLDR;  Should have bought an LT double cab?  You'd have a power seat, the wheel controls, the cluster, all things that you've been seeking in your various posts so far about your new WT regular cab.
