4 free oil changes, who uses them?

So it's time for my oil change, I always do them myself and I am debating using the GM free ones. I priced Mobil one and filter and it's about 85 bucks for two 5 quart jugs and AC Delco filter. (5.3 and 6.2 require 8.5 quarts)

I don't mind saving 85 dollars but do they use crappy oil? I know you have to wait awhile when they do it because there are so many doing their changes.

Just curious on what you guys do as well, also if you do it yourself do you use 0-20w?

Seems like it would be like water being so thin, I was thinking of using 5-30w thinking that would quite down the mechanical fuel pump that's driven by the cam.

I've had 2 free oil changes with GM recommended oil, I figure they are going to warranty the motor for 100,000 miles.

First thing, the book is wrong. It only takes 8 quarts with a filter change.

I am not going to let the dealership change my oil. I have not decided whether to stick with Mobil 1 or change to either Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Amsoil. I am not going to use a Delco filter.

I will stick with the recommended weight oil.

The oil the dealer uses is a synthetic blend. It works fine for our 7,500 oci. I used my four and have no worries. Now I buy two 5Qt jugs of oil from WallyWorld for just under $50 and a filter for $8 and do it myself.

I used a free dealer oil change but you need to tell them that they only take 8 quarts instead of 8.5 and has been updated in the service manual. They are using GM DEXOS approved 0-20 Blended Synthetic oil which is what your truck came with. I will be using 5-20 Mobile Extended Performance after the freebies.

You should just stick with 0-20, its fine and will not hurt anything. The engine was designed for this.

I'm taking mine to the dealer, why not? Its free with the purchase. They are also suppose to top off all fluids and rotate your tires too, chk pressures, etc.

As much as we paid for our truck I'm going to squeeze all I can out of my Chevy dealer, for as long as I can.

I agree, If they are going to warranty the motor for 100,000 miles why would they put in inferior oil? To some of the postings on here, if something would go wrong with your engine and you tried getting it fixed under warranty they could maybe come back at you for using a non-recommended oil weight and not cover it. Remember they will try everything NOT to fix it on their dollar. JMO

I don't trust the knuckleheads at the service department at our GM dealers. They've screwed up alot of stuff lately, I wouldn't even let them put gas in my truck

Sounds like ours..... they would fill it with diesel for you lol. I let them do one on mine so far and am pretty sure they put in 8.5 quarts as it's overfull by a bit. I might just start doing it myself from here onward to avoid that issue. The last company truck they kicked back to the one guy I work with that was in for an oil leak came back with the CEL on for Banks 1 and 2 lean codes...... top notch indeed.

Are y'all having any luck getting them to change the oil before the oil life monitor gets low? I would like to use my four every six months, but don't put enough miles on it to have the monitor drop very low in that time period.

I upgraded my 6.0 to full syn for 35 bucks.

No way I change my own oil in a gas engine when it's free or otherwise.

Too easy to let someone else do it.

Also, I change at 3k. Dealer doesn't care.

Yeah, I know, but I'm old school and oil is cheap.

No problem at all. You get 4. Use them how you want.

I've had 2 free dealer changes but stopped after that. When I did the third one myself, the drain plug and oil filter were so friggin' tight I needed a breaker bar to get them loose.....and I have to wonder if they bothered to use a clean funnel and primed the oil filter.

    • No I didn’t watch a video of a person who analyzes oil for a living explain general oil usage. For clarity I did ask my brothers one who runs our equipment business. The other who runs our old ROW business about oil usage. Nothing has changed since I retired. Their personal vehicles or work vehicles use no oil. Not enough to see on the oil checking device. Then I pondered. I like to ponder. In this extended oil changing world with oil change countdowns or lights. If engines used say a qt every 2500 miles or up to even 4000 miles. With oil changes reaching as high as 15000 miles. Normal for most people is eight to ten. Vehicles should potentially be seizing up all over the place. Especially in hilly terrain. Just how many people actually check their oil? Maybe 10 percent. Those are the people that probably change their oil early. I like to research used car listings. I have five favorite dealers I check. They all list carfax with their listing. It’s rare to see vehicles with anything but extended oil changes. Transmission service, forget about it. I’ve seen Honda and Toyota certified vehicles up to 100K miles and ten years old. With nothing but normal maintenance. Isn’t nice we all have different experiences and believe our way is the best. You certainly get backup for whatever you believe. Life would be boring otherwise.
    • Interesting rumor. Dealers near me have been tight-lipped so far, but if this reveal actually happens next week, I'm really hoping they finally give the HD a proper interior overhaul. The competition has been eating their lunch in the cabin department for a while now.
    • There are a few good takeaways in that video that pertain to this thread, certainly the possibility of the oil control rings having buildup, the fuel injectors and how clean or not that they are ending up affecting the pistons rings carbon buildup, and the fact that its normal up to a point for a given engine to use some oil, and that the oil quality that is being utilized is part of that ring clogging up issue as well.   I was talking with a neighbor yesterday who has a baby LZ0 duramax and he had bought it slightly used but it does consume some oil and he has switched over to 5W-30 Euro spec oil and in this case that never made a difference in consumption over the factory 0W-20 recommendation. He finds it uses a quart in about 3500 miles and as he goes a ways over that distance he adds oil to full and goes another 1000 miles or so and then changes oil and is typically at 40% or so left on the oil monitor at that point with his use case of quite a lot of highway miles and more limited in short run use. I don't know what other LZ0 engines are doing for oil consumption but that is what his is doing.
    • I dont care what Lake says. Goodnight.
    • Ok well I guess Lake disagrees with me on a few points. I call oil consumption pretty basic. Rudimentary. He calls it "really complicated." I think 1qt consumed in 3k miles is a lot. He says that's normal. In 22 minutes, he'll use his natural talent to explain oil consumption to anyone watching this video. He covers everything from obvious engine damage to how normally functioning healthy engines consume oil by design. Lake explicitly states how you drive will impact oil consumption.   Shut up and watch:
