value of stock Rancho off-road shocks?

That tells me that you and your friend have done a lot of riding on crappy, worn out shocks

Or maybe the Rancho shock was built better in 2002...

I had a 2002 Ford f150 fx4 lariat crew cab and it had the Rancho shocks on it. A friend of mine bought that truck and still has it with about 185k miles on it and it still has the Rancho shocks.

I had the same 02 fx4 and shocks were shot. Go back and read ford forums. Guys were replacing those ranchos in first few years of ownership when those trucks were new. When they took them off they were doing nothing. Could manipulate by hand or they just sat there.

Just some rebadged junk shocks, they paid for the license. Ive heard some guys say real ranchos they bought aftermarket werent bad though.

Same here. Plan on Bilstein and K02's after about 20-30k miles. Can't justify it before then.

I have had 2 new style GM trucks now w/ the ranchos. my 2014 was totaled @ just under 40,000 miles - I was about ready to pull trigger on the bilsteins then....kinda wish I did even though it got totaled back in July since it took so damn long for them to come in!!!

Then I got a new '15 GMC sierra - same All Terrain model only w/ 6.2 but with the same ranchos of course. Going from my 40k mileage 2014 to the new 2015 I could tell right away - WOW the '14 shocks were SHOT. The new '15 w/ the Ranchos rode OK - much better than the 40k miles, but the bouncing, loose feeling got worse and @ 5500 miles when I swapped them out for the bilstein 5100's all 4 corners they were ready to go IMO - maybe 10,000 miles is the "max" life w/ light use for a stock rancho shock LOL!!! The stock ranchos are SO light and chintzy feeling compared to the bilsteins - funny I started this thread and I wouldn't charge anyone a dime for them, just shipping if you really want them!!

I am mad I even waited that long! I'll be doing away w/ the Wrangler SRA's adding either BFG KO2s or Toyo open country AT's in spring to complete the ride (running michelin snow tires currently, they are much better than the SRA's too!)

What is the Rancho model shock GM is using for the Z71 package?

I had the OEM Blsteins on a Tundra then swapped them (@~100k miles) for Bilstein 5100's stock height. Big difference but maybe the originals were worn.

I know we can always upgrade, but must we?

Just some rebadged junk shocks, they paid for the license. Ive heard some guys say real ranchos they bought aftermarket werent bad though.

No way would a large corporation that has to build its reputation on building something strong to last and take abuse off road put a shock that isn't even theirs on an vehicle with their name on it. If you owned a higher end hotel chain, would you allow an hourly rental roach motel to use your name? It is just their bottom of the line shock, it won't win any desert races and hold up to 10 years loaded down on and rough dirt logging trail. It was designed with minimal R&D and cheaper parts to keep the costs down. You can't expect high end quality and handling on a cheap price which is what OEM's try to balance...

If you buy a higher end shock you would expect it to be better than stock. Does that make the stock junk? No, are some people sprinkling fairy dust and making them sound much worse than they are and fabricating tales? Of course! I highly question the validity when people state they were shot (meaning worn out not failed as in leaking or broken) after 5k miles. Either you abuse the truck beyond measures or you were not knowing what you are feeling for. Do you know how many test trucks would have come back to the GM engineers if they failed after only 5k miles?

They're f'inf junk, open your eyes. There's a bump on rt 4 in ri and anytime I see a 14 plus gm, I get behind it and laugh my balls off at how it logos over the bump. My 5100s take it and steady out, while stock Rancho junkman is still pogoing and has coffee in his lap.

Too much experience seeing the ranchos OEMs use as junk. Sorry, guys were pulling them off the 97-02 F150s with 10k, 15k miles etc on them and you could push them in and out by hand. No pressure left. The ones on these 14+ GM's are no different, complete junk.

Lets be honest too, no one was desert racing most these failures are on mild use trucks.

It's like GM just payed for the label on those.

I have aftermarket adjustable Rancho 9000s on my truck. The fronts have close to 485k miles on them now. Went through 5 rear shocks in that time. They start to leak and I replace. I think its the air bags I have, limit rear travel.
