How often is too often for WOT operation

Is this a real question, it was designed to be able to run that. Unless you move rev limiter, speed limiter, or are being an idiot pretty much as much as you want. The LS engines with higher miles tended to run better/harder if they were flogged young. Buddy had several B4C Camaro cop cars and those things were rode hard, had a long life, and ran great! Mod for mod always edged my z28 and were functionally the same. Nothing special about the B4C's.

Engines are designed to be ran, not made out of glass. Hard to hurt them if its stock unless your doing something dumb like I said.

Brings up a good point, there is no red line on these trucks. My 02 didn't have one either and the pedal seemed to stay to the floor, but so were my 4L60E trannys every 6 months [emoji38]

Um yes this a real question. And thank you for your reply and all the others too. I mainly just wanted to see how often others do it more than I'm concerned about hurting anything. But with these new engines being a different design than previous models. (DI engines) i was curious whether it's more hard on the engines now or the same as before.

Every LS motor I've ever had, I've run the hell out of all of them and they have taken it all. If you maintain your motor with regular service, it should last you as many WOTs as you can muster.

Above poster is correct... no such thing. I flog this truck like anything else I have ever owned lol. My 05 has 170000 miles, 5300 hours on it and the WOT shifts are at 5900 rpm ( up from 5200 stock) on the old LQ4 and it runs like a champ. I treat anything I own the exact same way.

Its just not shown in red font on the cluster, like the performance variants. They just stopped the gauge just past the limiter. I dont know exactly but anyone who has tuned one would know if they want to chime in. Looked like just shy of 6000 was the shift point 58-5900. Imagine the limiter is 6000. I dont know if you can hit the limiter in these trucks or not if you hold a gear.

From my recollection most LS engines were around that 6000 shift point, its been awhile though. Think the camaros and such showed red line past 6k.

LQ4 and LQ9 anyway were 5200 rpm WOT. Rev limiter was 5700 rpm stock and kicks off at 5650. Mine sits at 5900 rpm and 6200 rpm limiter now... I tuned the trucks myself with EFILive.

Sorry didnt mean for that to come off quite as mean as that sounded, but it did. Point was dont sweat it, I dont beat on it to beat on it like I have some of my GM performance cars, but if you feel the urge or need to get going dont sweat it. They can take a lot more than what stock limits allow.

Ahh thank you for the correction, bet all gen 3 LS engines were close to that. Think I was thinking of what tuners usually bumped them up to like you did.

I went by memory and then edited my post once I opened a couple tune files lol. The rev limiter is 5700 stock and renables at 5650. 5200 is the stock WOT shift though. Funny thing too as these are from HD trucks as well.... and GM liked to only rate the engine at 4400 rpm but let it rev to 5200 like the half tons anyhow lol.

Much north of 6200 and you'll start to float the valves. Sit there long enough (any M6 Camaro guys here???) and you'll own some warped pushrods. But that's a cheap fix.

My cammed and sprung LS1 has the cap at 6800 if I recall. Ran it at 7k for dyno. Didn't really see any gains, and pretty tough on the tranny. But OMG the wail from the open headers! :)

I like this thread. I go WOT once or twice a week in my 6.2 Denali. It's great for freeway ramps and general stress relief.

I ran my 02 ZO6 hard as hell and put er away wet. It was safe to assume that if I left my driveway I was probably hitting redline or close to it. Love these engines. Keep up with your basic checks and maintenance and they will last forever.

After driving a Slo-Poke 62 mph Freightliner and dodging Distracted Retards , a W.O.T usually happens everyday. Airaid with Corsa Exhaust sounds great but W.O.T with 4.8 Vortec and Magnaflows was even better

    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas
    • Thanks, so being a different beast altogether, anyone know what the "optimal" temp is for the 10L80/90 for proper shifting?
    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
    • Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?
    • What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
