When should I do first oil change on new truck?

The tolerances on these modern engines really aren't particularly tight at at all.... you guys really should decipher what they mean by that. A funny one was on a F150 where some self proclaimed gods gift to Ford mechanic was spouting about tight tolerances on the new 5 liter and how they have to run thinner viscosity oil. He posted the bearing clearances from the service manual for his defense. Someone else posted the specs from a 1970 302 and they were nearly spot on identical.... he shut up and left the thread entirely.

All it is referencing is acceptable error is tighter.... which is even a joke if you start tearing them down and measuring. For oil I treat it like any fresh engine I build from scratch. ... change it early.... and I did my 2015s 6.2 at about 1200 miles. Let the dealer so my first one so as to not fight with the factory oil filter. ... they made a big oil mess in my skid plate so now I just do it at home with amsoil and my 15000 mile intervals.

Clearances, and tolerances, are not the same thing.

And nobody understands that... they think tolerances means your bearing clearance and piston to wall are nil..... Like I said though... the tolerance they say are tighter.... really aren't tighter either. If you don't believe me... rip a bunch of gmpp engines apart and measure them. Then compare it to the acceptable measurements on the provided spec sheets... your eyebrow will rise, I guarantee lol.

I use to change every 25K with amsoil, now that the warranties are longer I go per owners manual. I drive them like I stole them, 42 years of driving never lost an engine or trans do to extended drains.

I was an amsoil dealer, built and sold heavy equipment did all the oil analyzing required. My 06 trailblazer ss was extended on Mobil one per the dealer. I guess GM and Amsoil are not as informed as you.

Just like guys like you that refuse to run the recommended fuel in your truck.... I don't buy used much either lol.

I changed the engine oil in my new trucks at 1,000 miles. Never touched anything else, but the longest I've owned a brand new one was for 30k miles.

I agree that regular oil changes at reasonable intervals is good for the long term well being of your engine. Even if you don't notice the benefit, it helps to have a handful of receipts when selling your vehicle or if you need to make a claim with GM. I can't see the same issue with fuel, at least where I live. The recommended fuel is octane 87 or higher and that's all you can buy here! You may argue I'm wasting money by putting in higher than 87 but I'm not mistreating my truck if I use 89 or 91 octane.

No one could possibly care less if you use 91 in your 5.3 or whatever that is tuned for 87..... 6.2's recommend premium and he is one of the owners that are adamant it's a waste of money using it. Extended oil drain intervals following the oil blenders recommendation is not hurting the engine.... you have a just as much chance of detonating a 6.2 to death with a load on and cheap gas than hurting it with a good quality synthetic oil and going even the 25000 miles Amsoil claims providing you don't have a fuel dilution or filtration problem.... I do extended drain intervals and I really don't care about receipts and such... I buy the stuff in bulk so it doesn't really much matter.... I don't have individual maintenance receipts anyhow. Gm will analyze the oil upon a claim and then go after you if you were neglecting the vehicle... I know this for a fact after losing a 6 liter in an 09 3/4 ton and it never had a maintenance receipt of any kind with it... they didn't even cause a fuss to put a long block in the truck because one of the lifters that had been rattling it's entire life since day one ate a lobe off the cam at 60000 miles.

I am mostly just bugging the guy as its a scenario of the pot calling the kettle black really.... he wouldn't buy someone's vehicle because of extended oil drains and the possibility the guy drives hard... well I wouldn't buy one knowingly detonating and dropping into the low octane spark table it's whole life either.... just because you never hear it audibly it's not a free pass... it's the knock sensors doing their job. Lol. I am doing 15000 mile intervals with my truck and amsoils filters and oil.... but once I make 7500 miles or so I am sampling and sending it to a lab for analysis mostly concerned on fuel dilution... if it's nil then 15000 mile drains it is. I would rather this than the dealer monkeys make a mess and over or under fill it with the 4 included oil changes.... that just waste 2 or 3 hours of my life at a minimum.

Truth be told I am thinking I will do 15000 miles just following the olm... I am at over 6000 miles since my last change and still above 50%.....

DI motors run dirty.

People that say these new motors have tighter tolerances are idiots.

Opinions on oil are stupid, unless you have sample results you are just talking out your ass.

I don't like to use samples so I simply keep it changed.

The region/conditions you live in has more to do with the oil being dirty vs miles.

Living in the cold snow belt equals lots of milk/moisture in the oil, water doesn't lube! Dirt/dust will kill oil in no time.

Take his comments with a grain of salt. He's like that in every thread and nearly every response. He doesn't mean any harm, he's just off-putting with his self-proclaimed knowledge. He does have some good points sometimes, once you read through the mess.

New to the forums here. Not looking to hijack the topic, but looking to change oil on my new 16 Sierra and the AC Delco filter in the manual calls for PF63, but all I could find was PF63E. I did some research and found that the "E" is the replacement to the PF63. Since there quite a few mechanically inclined individuals on here I figured I would see if anyone can confirm that I should now be using PF63E? Thanks for the help!

Yes it is fine to use. You can even have the guy at the parts store run the truck info and pull up the filters for it. I personally use Mobil 1 filters myself
