When should I do first oil change on new truck?

Wait until your 'Maint' light comes on or change it for free before then. I did mine at 7500 when the light came on and my truck didn't break down, blow up, catch on fire or simultaneously combust as some would have you think if you wait that long. Truck now has 36,000 miles. Do what makes you sleep better at night.

I wanted to change my factory oil at 1k miles, but got busy and didn't get around to it until 2k miles. Then I switched to Amsoil synthetic with an Amsoil filter of course. This pair has served me well for over a decade on both cars and motorcycles.

I'm sure the factory oil is good quality oil, and I'm sure that you can go 6k-7k miles on it, but I prefer to treat my engine as good as possible by running the good stuff. I'm not the norm, in that I typically keep my vehicles for long time.

Wow...I bought my 06 Silverado new. Never did any thing other then change engine oil when it told me too. Did tranny filter at 100,000. Sold it with 108,000 on it ran perfect. Never any problems.

3 K on the first change and then at 8 and 13. Will do my own after 4 freebies, every 5k.

Welp, I did mine tonight at 871 miles. Went with Mobil 1 synthetic and a Purolator filter. I am spooky about oil after just recently getting out of a GMT900 that was eating a quart every 1200 miles.

Damn the filler hole and dipstick are hard to access on these trucks without a stool,

Thanks for all the replies.

To help reduce oil consumption get a Range unit. I noticed with mine installed it reduced the oil consumption, my dad has it on his 09 Silvy after having his camshaft go bad due to the afm

Of course the only part on these 5.3's that is the same as the 09 5.3 is the label that says 5.3.

And AFM system, and I'm sure most of the internal motor components

My 2009 with a 5.3 also drank oil at a similar rate. I heard so many times how my oil consumption was within GM tolerances. I hadn't had to top off between oil changes like this since my $100 cars in the early seventies! Finally, at 80,000 kms GM gave me a major engine overhaul and the next 80,000 kms didn't require any oil top ups. I now have 6,000 on my 2015 4.3 and no loss of oil.

My sister drives a BMW 750I that consumes around 3-4 quarts between oil changes and is "within bmw tolerances" as per the dealer. It seems a lot of new engines guzzle oil.

tolerances are so tight with modern motors that all those old school practices are not needed

what he said.. drive it like you stole it.

The tighter the tolerances, the more of a reason to break it in by driving normally, instead of driving it like you stole it.
