So took my truck for my first vibration visit. They told me front two tires were out of balance picked up my truck and guess what still there.. Laughable. So after reading this and other vibration topic I literally sent these threads to the service manager to review. The game plan is driveshaft balance, possible engine mount shim 3mm, then leaf springs.

 

Should be going in Monday or Tuesday. But also after reading this thread I inspected my leaf springs and the passenger side the bottom leaf literally is not stacking inline on top of the others see pic. I also had experienced during a turn and hitting a bump the truck almost feel like it jumped and the rear end slid

That's a much better price than I had thought and zone makes some good stuff. You look like the man for the job ic3man5 haha

 

I think I'm going to try the clamps only on the rear this weekend and include the overload. Frenchsquared is the only one that said his vibes completely went away with the clamps and he put his on 8" behind the axle. Still torn on whether to put them on in front of or behind. I tried in front but never drove on the highway and am taking a highway trip this weekend and might give it a shot on the rear.

1.) Mark your tires to make sure they aren't spinning on the rim - If they are goodyear wrangler tires try to convince the dealership to upgrade them for you (I'd pay the difference in a heart beat - I believe the upgrade on the sticker for my bridgestone tires were like $200-300).

2.) Have them inspect u-bolts for proper torque (If you can remember can you ask them what the proper spec is suppose to be?)

3.) If you have the tools you should get the clamps and see if it helps the vibration (take them off before you bring it back in and let them know it helped).

If I do it I'll have to wait until the weather is better, right now I compacted a bunch of dirt and ice in between my leafs and my clothes looked similar to the leafs. I was also expecting the price to be a lot more than that.

I have aftermarket Lund rock rails and side steps I am not even putting on until they fix it so they can't make excuses.

No, its literally the wheel spinning on the rim, if that is happening then no more balance. Just place a mark on the wheel and the rim (A line) and see if they still line up - if they are slipping they won't line up anymore.

 

edit: if you are going hard enough the rear end will "jump" over bumps, its the nature of a solid axle rear end in a pick-up.

I've had the rear end clunk for the last couple of months. Started when it got cold but still did it on days when it warmed to 60 degrees. Mostly a single or double clunk when backing out of the driveway or pulling out from a stop with the wheels turned sharp right. I really think it's the right spring binding and unloading with a clunk.

 

I took it in for state inspection a couple of weeks back and had the dealer look for the source. They heard it but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. It went back in last week for them to try to find it and they did not hear the noise that day. They found the TSB that told them to torque all the spring fasteners and had to order new shackle nuts.

 

Back in today to install the shackle nuts. They called an hour after I dropped it off and said that there is an aftermarket rear sway bar installed and spring clamps installed. Can they disconnect them to check if these are making the noise? Funny it's the third time they have had the truck and they finally found the sway bar and clamps. Did they even look underneath it on the first two visits?

 

Now I'm waiting for the call that with the aftermarket parts installed, they cannot fix the problem under warranty.

Has anyone tried them behind the axle yet? Most seem to be trying them in front, me included. I haven't had a chance to try the rear yet but curious how it might have worked out if anyone had.

I currently have mine on the front and the rears but not clamping the overload leaf, seems to be pretty decent so far.

I tightened my stock U bolts on the leaf springs to 80 ft-lbs. This significantly reduced the vibration I felt at 70-80 MPH. There is still some vibration near 80 MPH but it seems to have smoothed out the 70-75 MPH vibration. At 80MPH it is significantly better. The U bolts seemed to be around 40-50 ft-lbs factory. Also, now the vibration seems to come and go whereas before it was constant at those speeds. I still have the mild vibration at 45mph when decelerating. I suggest tightening the factory U bolts as a first step for anybody with vibration issues at 70-80mph.

I have them installed 5 inches past the axle and included the overload. Noticed no change in ride quality but the clunk is almost completely gone and I had a slight vibration at 80 (could see the passenger seat moving) that for now seems to be completely eliminated. Should I have not included the overload leaf? Will this damage the truck at all?

I checked the torque of the u bolts and found them at 45 ftlb. Torqued them to 75. That moved the vibration from 50-60mph to 75-80mph. I decided to try the spring clamps. Installed 8" in front of the axle, all leafs tightly together. High speed vibes gone but seems that there is a light vibration from 30-50 now. Of course this depends on the road surface. Feels better than the cycling vibration that was there before anything was done.

I checked the torque of the u bolts and found them at 45 ftlb. Torqued them to 75. That moved the vibration from 50-60mph to 75-80mph. I decided to try the spring clamps. I had a look at mine today and found the same as others around 40 ft/lbs so I re-torqued to 85. I can't say if it helps or not. I almost want to say it made the ride worse but I still have snow tires on and the weathers warming up so hard to tell.

I put the clamps on the rear today about 6" from the block behind the axle. It didn't help at all and made the ride very harsh. In front of the axle is definitely the way to go in my opinion.

    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL? 
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31.
