Do you like RUST

I think GM honestly just dips these frames with rust, slag and oil on them.... hence why it bleeds through so fast or falls off. My 2015 had rust on it when I picked it up. I just painted over it for now with a rubberized undercoat but eventually once it bleeds through I migh buff it and try something. My truck sees gravel and salt and winter..... so the coating has no chance of staying on the frame even if it was applied perfectly!

The frame is run through a wash before the wax dip.

And it obviously doesn't clean metal slag or rust off.... which it wouldn't be able too anyhow. Gm's frame coatings have been a joke for decades... and won't be getting better anytime soon. They could get with times and just paint the damn things like everyone else does instead of coating them in road tar. But that does not repair their shoddy prep process.

OP, you need to look at the frame rust thread that has been going on for over 2 years. That rust in not pretty but you are not the only one who got a new truck with that much rust on it. They will fix it under warranty.

I bought a new 15 sierra rcsb at xmas and their is no rust underneath. Even the frame wax is applied quite thick and not one sign of peeling or flaking . Strange how some of these pictures show some trucks are rusting

Now that is bad. Didn't GM extend the warranties on the 2016's to help in cases like this?

No.... they cut the warranty on the powertrain back to 60000 miles though. Big show of confidence for the customer there. This isn't sheet metal so your best hope is the 3 year 36000 mile warranty helps you out. Oher than that... it's good will.

latest..... I'm right there with the bashing when things go bad BUT I also have to stand up when people do the right thing. My dealer has been 100% supportive and has agreed to replace my truck, and is currently searching inventory. We have found my truck was transferred from a Michigan dealer (I'm in SC) and is over one year since manufacture. My dealer is upset with the original dealer! I'll call out my dealer for congrats when all this comes to fruition, but for now I have to say there are reputable, stand up dealers out there (and I have one).

Brand new truck purchased this week. The rust is not limited to the frame, it is everywhere under the truck. The dealer has admitted they got the truck "from somewhere else". I think the truck is water damaged but we'll see. Worse thing..... I traded a perfectly good 2014 Silverado with 8K miles due to the great deal......

Well there is the answer, "somewhere else" obviously looks like to me flood damaged by sea water. I would demand your money back and go to a dealer that doesn't try and @#@# you! Either that or they better cut you the deal of the century if they tried to pass that truck off as new!

I'm also no fan of the wax dip process as it fades rather quickly if it doesn't fall off first. But in saying that my 05 had the same treatment as well as my 95 s10 zr2 and never had a single frame issue with either after 10 years in the northeast and 100,000+ miles of driving.

That looks like a unique situation. My '14 with 24k miles has zero rust anywhere underneath...

I would go to the dealer and have a "chat"..

Um...did you guys read the OPs post #22? The truck was in Michigan...on the lot for over a year...dealer is replacing it for him. End of story...

You got lucky then. This was what my 2006 looked liked after I bought it with 232k miles.

That is a 10 year old truck with a ton of miles. Also I think the frame is still good. Sure its rusted but from the pic's it doesn't look compromised or rotten anywhere. If that were a Toyota with that many miles if would have holes. Also you live in PA. Like you I live in Ohio and that's about 100K miles in pure salt/brine wash.

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
